After Oktiberfest - where to go in Italy?

Hi all,

We will be spending 3 days in Italy after the upcomimg EU shows. Where do you recommend we visit?

Obviously Rome but what else?

Thanks, Mitch

marcop 07-29-2013 07:30 PM

Three days in Rome will barely scratch the surface there, the city is almost three thousand years old and there's an incredible amount to see.

slapass 07-29-2013 07:49 PM

I agree. Do all three in Rome.

Pipecrew 07-29-2013 08:03 PM

definitely Venice if its not still under water completely.

NETbilling 07-30-2013 12:03 AM

Thanks - any more input?

FLORENCE.... believe me is an amazing and beautiful city

jimmycastor 07-30-2013 02:12 AM

depends what you searching, action ? relaxation ? lovers time ?

3 days, you better stay in one place, venezia needs a full day to enter and leave
its charming, and i prefer it over rome, cause you can stay in areas that are not s crowded and still very charming, everything arround academia or st thoma is great
and you get good bars, restaurants, even if its a tourist town, its not as rotten as rome.

i dont like rome, sure it has all those classics but i had bad lucking falling into the worst hotels (loud , small rooms and dirty) even when spending 250$ a night and
the worst food there because its made for tourism and you will be treated like a tourist. in 3 days you wont have a chance to deeply discover the town. yeah and the collosseum, vatican etc ...you have seen it a thousand times before on films, pictures etc..

my favorite is naples, best food, best view over the mediteran sea and you get that
al pacino /scorcese flavour 100% and probably the nicest italian guys/girls

if you are more the mountain dude, como and the surrounding area is great, also its close to munich (a 4-5 hours ride) it has awesome styleful luxury hotels surrounding the sea , awesome for relaxing
but a lil bit more expensive. you can take a suite surrounding the lake for arround 1000$ 3 days and youll feel like mussolini . great if your arround with a new romance or want to
fresh up your relationship. not perfect if your on your own or traveling with a group.

watch out for the mafia

Manfap 07-30-2013 03:03 AM

3 days in Rome.. try 3 months. walk the seven hills.
why waste time travelling around?
pick one.

Florence (could include a day in Sienna as it´s close)
Rome
Venice (bit smelly this time of year)
Bolonga (mainly for the food)

Dont try to visit more than one place if you´re only there for 3 days.

and Florence and Rome, you will get pickpocketed by gipsies, they like snatching bags on scooters aswell.

DamianJ 07-30-2013 03:10 AM

I'm a big fan of Sicily, esp Palermo.

Umbalabob 07-30-2013 04:38 AM

Avoid in all cases Milano. Everybody things it is a pearl of sights and fashion. But it is only industry and nothing more! The most disappointing city I have ever been!

Phoenix 07-30-2013 04:48 AM

i really liked Florence..i think it was my favourite.
Venice is cool, but florence..i think i could live there.

I agree. Looked like any other old European city with dirty buldings.

As for Rome, I don't know why, but I wasn't amazed by it that much. Mabye it was the fucking hot weather and masses of tourists but I felt bored and the city was a bit dirty too. They didn't want to let me in the catedral in Vatican city, cause of the knee length shorts I was wearing.

Fuck them.

Shotsie 07-30-2013 08:54 AM

Any place above Rome can barely be considered Italy. If you want to see Italy you have to go to the Mezzogiorno.

Mickey_ 07-30-2013 09:04 AM

Have one of your rides shipped or rent one and hit the roads of Tuscany.

I concur regarding spending all three days in Rome. Actually, you should extend your trip to a week if at all possible, and even that would not be nearly enough.

What's amazing to think about as you walk around and see the sites is that Rome burned several times. All the art and architecture you see is only that which survived, likely a small fraction of masterpieces that were forever lost.

Jman 07-30-2013 09:19 AM

Why not go shack the hand of the devil in Vatican city ;)

Minte 07-30-2013 09:44 AM

Rome is a pretty city to tour, but I won't go back. In all the touristy spots its nothing but a hotbed for pick pockets. Constantly people are *bumping* into you. I was warned and left my wallet in the safe and only took a credit card.

I much prefer the Florence, Modena/Tuscany areas. Small towns are much more interesting. Lake Como is fabulous.

Modena is in Emilia, about 30 km from Bologna and an 1+ hour from Florence by train. The food throughout Emilia-Romagna is excellent. Also, on the outskirts of Modena is Maranello where the Ferrari factory and museum are located. Both Bologna and Modena aren't very touristy, and are beautiful cities with plenty to see, eat, and drink.

webgurl 07-30-2013 09:54 AM

Rome is awesome. Venice is really smelly but you gotta experience it atleast once. The food in touristy big cities of Italy sucks, to experience real Italian food you have to get home cooked meals or go to small towns.

Nicky 07-30-2013 09:56 AM

I'd do Florence/Tuscany

sperbonzo 07-30-2013 10:41 AM

Hey there Mitch. Have fun!

Personally I recommend cinque terre. One of the prettiest little places on the planet IMHO. Wonderful place to spend a day and an evening.

Such great advice - thanks everyone!

Venice and Rome kick ass. In Venice rent the taxi boat and have him do a tour should be about 40 Euros then get the gongolla ride Tell him to show u cool stuff. That is best way And in Rome u MUST do Vatican tour

kichi 07-30-2013 04:26 PM

All 3 days in ROME. FUCK FLORENCE. I have spent over 1 year traveling all over Italy on 4 trips. Rome is by far the best city in Italy. You would be insane to skip Rome. When you do Rome, don't just do the top 10 attractions. Go on tripadvisor and go see some smaller things like catacombs and some parks on the edge of town. I lived in Rome for 2 months last year 1 block from Spanish Steps. It is an incredible place. My favorites: Vatican, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Colosseum, Palintine Hill, Roman forum, catacombs, the churches. There is no other place on earth like it. This is were it basically all started.

Positano or anywhere on Amalfi coast comes in second for me. If you do that you must walk "The Path of the Gods" Amazing hike through the oceanfront cliffs.

Third would be Venice.

I will be moving to Rome permanently in Jan with my wife and son.

Good luck.
