Ten black contestants sue American Idol for $25 M each

From the "is this a black thing?" files comes this: 'American Idol': 10 African-American former contestants sue the FOX show, ask for $25 million each

http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethe...lion-each.html
Ten former "American Idol" contestants from various seasons, all of whom happen to be African-American, have filed a lawsuit against the FOX reality show claiming they were unjustly kicked off the show because of their race.

The contestants are accusing the producers of conducting a "cruel and inhumane" plot to exploit their lives for ratings by illegally researching their arrest records and using the histories to embarrass them on national television, TMZ reports.

The contestants involved are Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Jacob John Smalley (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell Brittenum (Season 5), Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju'Not Joyner (Season 8) and Chris Golightly (Season 9).

The lawyer representing the contestants in the suit claims the show used the arrest info to make his clients out to be "violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants" when, in fact, none had ever been convicted of the charges stemming from their arrests.

More still, the lawyer alleges that only African-American people were ever questioned about their criminal pasts, never the Caucasian contestants. The 10 plaintiffs claim their lives were ruined by the show's alleged racist portrayals.

The plaintiffs are suing for discrimination and other allegations, with each of the 10 seeking $25 million, minimum, in damages. They're also hoping that "Idol" will adopt new anti-racism regulations.
Do they have a case?

MaDalton 07-25-2013 05:45 AM

i have a feeling i know where this thread will go...

Jman 07-25-2013 05:52 AM

LMAO that is fucking ridiculous... They couldn't sing period.

Can we create a "Racism" sub forum please?

Lace 07-25-2013 06:43 AM

When will the blacks in America let go of the racism card? Everything is being turned into racism.

L-Pink 07-25-2013 06:48 AM

I'm suing the Boston Celtics because they don't have enough white players on the court. Should have 4 white players starting to accurately reflect area demographics.

Difficult to get anyone to let go of a crutch and catch-all excuse. Particularly when other prominent people build careers around playing the race card vs actually doing anything about the problems and helping people... including many in politics and in the media.

Or course, it would help if the discussion could be had, since its clearly believed that a problem exists without one side instantly calling the other side racist to direct attention away from the issues.

Tom_PM 07-25-2013 07:23 AM

Sure they have a case. Everyone who wants anything has a case. It's unfortunate that such bullshit cases clog the legal system though. They might get more sympathy if they filed suit alleging that the show promised it was entertaining and failed to live up to it.

"The lawyer representing the contestants in the suit claims the show used the arrest info to make his clients out to be "violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants" when, in fact, none had ever been convicted of the charges stemming from their arrests."

That part is pretty fucked up, sensationalistic nature of it aside.

The Patriots cut Hernandez and he hasn't been convicted of anything either.

Harmon 07-25-2013 08:03 AM

Leave it to the kneegs to look for a payout where there isn't one. I heard one of the petitioners is Chris Butler from Van Wert Ohio

CDSmith 07-25-2013 08:08 AM

Does anyone think they are using the timely so-called "anti-black//white guy kills poor black kid" sentiment left by the Zimmerman case as a stepping stone? Did they wait for that trial's outcome before launching this suit?

Anyone think they're all going to get $25M each?

not up on that, being UK here, but I *kinda* understand where someone can be 'suspended', for want of a better word, if it's a case of waiting on a decision on whether someone has been charged, and what the outcome is (if that's the case with this Hernandez guy) - is that what's happened? Not saying I necessarily agree with that, as it really is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but like I say at the same time I can see why that happens, in more serious accusations (if that's even the case in your example).

To be arrested, never charged, and still have backlash, like the people in the OP, or indeed anyone, is beyond wrong though :(

To be clear the article says they were charged, just not convicted.

Jel 07-25-2013 08:47 AM

Cheers Squealer. Bit of a rock and a hard place with murder, rape, etc - I don't agree with suspending them, or whatever the correct term is, but can see why they did it. I would hope they (as in whomever, whenever) are on full pay while still classed as legally innocent. And even then that isn't as cut and dried as it sounds.

I am not a huge fan of football, but generally speaking, the NFL has made itself into a massive powerhouse and family oriented league and the Super Bowl of course is well known for having the most expensive ad time on tv.

4 of the top 10 most valuable sports teams in the world are NFL teams...

11 of the top 20 are NFL teams according to a recent article by Forbes.

The next 10 are almost all NFL teams.

In recent years, there has been a massive burst of crime, particularly violent crime and gun related crimes associated with NFL players so they are trying to stomp that down before it affects the sport too much, i guess... hence the strict policies.

Exactly like I said on the evidently controversial Rolling Stone magazine cover photo recently, this would have never been known if not for the publicity of this retardulous lawsuit. Congrats to the.. winners? losers? unconvicteds but chargeds?

We were raised dirt poor as kids but never saved grease in coffee cans on the stove top.
That is one of the things I noticed when visiting black homes. Between that and the pets trying to run away from home. How about the pliers on top of the television set next to the rabbit ears. Those were the days huh :1orglaugh

Yep, had those also.

I live right in the center of the USA, guess it depends on where you live.
I also should say I was raised on a farm, and honestly liked the fact that bacon grease was used to flavor some other items...

Captain Kawaii 07-25-2013 10:52 AM

Its been leaked before, the show is rigged. The rest is all Jerry Springer.

That aside, I think if someone has an arrest record they have to understand it will be used for/against them on the way up the ladder if they seek fame.

These sorts of lawsuits are nothing more than opportunity grasping for air and trying to knock that door down anyway possible. The brand of all the Cowell properties is at stake. Anyone think he will bow his head and say sorry and write a check?
