Why is Crime down in the USA?

Crime is at a many year low in the USA. These are some of the major possible reasons. Abortion as was put out in Freakanomics.
Longer jail times and a greater percent of citizens locked up.
Videogames, older boys and young men have less time to commit crimes.
Inner cities were cleaned up by easy mortgage money. Personal favorite.

Concealed carry and stand your ground/self defense laws.

Manfap 07-22-2013 05:36 AM

All crime, or just certain types.

maybe the medical weed card, has stopped alot of posession arrests, they do add up to a fair % of crime figures.

Now that the prison industrial complex and law enforcement sector has been flooded with money, they have to show for a few years that money is being well spent and crime stats going down. It's all a cycle of greed perpetuated by the whomever is in power at the time and their objectives.

Considering the number of people out of work, bums you have to step over, or standing at the off ramps, I doubt a medical marijuana card or free abortions have a lot of effect on true crime statistics.

In the last few decades there has been a flood of cash into the prison industrial complex and law enforcement. At some point, they have to make it look like they are actually doing something with all of that money or risk losing it.

do you have ANY evidence that the crime statistics have been rigged?

Relentless 07-22-2013 06:07 AM

Snatch and grab crime doesn't pay. White collar banking fraud does. If they prosecuted the people involved in rigging libor, laundering money for drug cartels, the mortgage scams and so on the crime stats would be off the charts. The fact that criminals now steal pensions, homes and bleed the entire economy instead of pulling a gold chain off your neck does not mean crime went down or that your neck is any safer in the long run.

Burglars have nothing to steal since the subprimes.
There is less money to pay the police.

I think there is a long list of reasons crime is down, and I think most of it has to do with our government. I remember being a kid and being afraid to go to NYC; On they way there it seemed like every mile or every other mile there was a burnt out car stripped down - cars would break down, people would go for help, and by the time a tow truck arrived the car would be stripped. I also believe that our police departments used to be completely corrupt, now it's much better...

Murder rate 100% down compared to 15 years ago, pretty impressive. If I have to take a guess, a combination of the carrot and the stick approach, which so far is working really well.

shimmy2 07-22-2013 07:09 AM

certainly not down here

Good to see only 75% of world economy destroying white collar crime is caused by black people I figured it was 100%

Choopa_Pardo 07-22-2013 07:59 AM

Ask people in Chicago about crime.

Lace 07-22-2013 08:25 AM

whoops... that's VIOLENT crime...wish they would take white collar guys and put them in level 5. it's one thing to get mugged etc. and something entirely different to trust someone to take care of your money, to me a much more violating crime and should have a harsher penalty, like they do in china :2 cents:

I'm sure they are thrilled - Crime is down in Chiacgo too. It's down to 500 gun deaths in one year, down from a high twice that. Don't get me wrong, 500 gun deaths is horrible, but it's a lot better than 900 or 1000 that they had ten years ago.

You would think crime would be going up in today's economy, not down.

Sly 07-22-2013 09:05 AM

It's really quite simple…

Not sure where you live but the US crime is way down. NYC has never had this few murders since they started counting them in 1965.

The Economist magazine has an issue out right now about how it is down all over the developed world.
