Justice Department reviewing Zimmerman case for possible civil rights violations
 

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Justice Department says it is looking into the shooting death of Trayvon Martin to determine whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that George Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case.

The department opened an investigation into Martin's death last year but stepped aside to allow the state prosecution to proceed.

In a statement Sunday, the Justice Department said the criminal section of the civil rights division, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office for the Middle District of Florida are continuing to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal probe, in addition to the evidence and testimony from the state trial.

The statement said that, in the government's words, "experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation."

I think this is mainly in regards to racial issues but really civil rights doesn't just mean race.

Trayvon was originally just a kid walking home from the store. It's easy to see how it is a concern. I doubt Zimmerman is a racist but he may have profiled him regardless.

Anyone with the smallest amount of situational awareness profiles everyone they pass.

Obama is a black president. Black kid gets killed by a non black means instant federal review for simply political reasons. Too much on stake for future congressional and senatorial elections with this type of high profile case. Should be interesting.

Correct. There is no doubt that Zimmerman killed Martin. He claimed self-defense and that is what his trial was about. Now the Federal Government is looking into whether Trayvon was targeted for his race. This is where that non-emergency dispatch call may bite him in the ass. For his sake, I hope he's made similar calls about white kids.

Yesterday Gawker published a photo of Trayvon at the crime scene. He was wearing skinny jeans and a properly sized hoodie. Sure didn't look like a thug. Had a look of innocence to him. Looked like a skinny kid other than how tall he was. Creeped me out.

His lawyers were smart and plumped Zimmerman up though. I've always wondered how much legal image consultants get paid.
