Apple people

I traded a older iMac for a iPad mini. The previous owner wiped the iPad and now I'm trying to set it up. It's just a WiFi model no cellular.

The problem is it won't let me set up using my apple ID it keeps asking for his. How do I set this up, does he have to remove the iPad from his cloud or something?

iTunes has a device list. Maybe it is synced with that still somehow and needs to be removed from the device list?

I'm not sure but that's what I'm thinking, but if that were the case, why would people bother stealing apple stuff if it could never be used.

I can't get to that screen because it's been wiped so I have to get past the set up first.

You have to put it into restore mode first (hold home and power button until it restarts, or something like that - google it) then you can use itunes to reset it.

I've tried that 3 times but each time when it goes to the log into iTunes after the install it still says it's linked to his account.

He claims that nothing is showing under his account and he gave me the receipt from when he bought it, so its not like a bad ESN type thing. Its a WiFi only model anyway.

Plug the iPad into your PC/Mac and load iTunes ...

On the left when it identifies the device, click it, and down near the bottom of the preview window should be an option to reset to factory settings ...

My brother used to work for apple as an iPad technician ill edit this post with his reply in a bit.

Here's what my brother said to do

"Hold lock and home button until it shuts off and the apple logo comes on. Ounce it comes on let go of lock keep holding home until it says plug into iTunes. Plug it in and restore it"

"In iOS 7 (Comes out in fall) you won't be able to do anything to fix this."

NSA (sorry, i mean apple) does not like people transferring hardware.

Lol! Not true at all. When I sold my Macbook I called Apple tech support to ask if there's anything special I should do and they were extremely helpful to me and to the new owner.

Actually I found out what it is and it's iOS7 related.

He had a developer install of ios7 on it and apple has added a new security feature to curb theft it seems.

The iPad is linked to your apple account and you have to delete the link prior to wiping the OS if you intend to sell it to a new user.

What happens if the link isn't deleted before you wipe it, it goes into security mode and won't let you reformat unless you use the previous owners log in info.

It's fixable and a bit inconvenient but sounds like a pretty good security feature to curb theft in the future.
