Back in the day, riots used to mean something, like standing up for your rights and people having enough of being pushed around by the powers that be (i.e - Watts riots, Stonewall riots). Now, it's about seizing an opportunity to smash and grab free shit.

That's great, and we should stand up for things we believe in. Just do it in a way that doesn't piss people off and do it in a way that doesn't cause damage.


The problem is they don't see how this costs them. You shut down local businesses for a few days... Local business loose money, employees get less hours, less taxes get paid and you get less city services. And when you want that same business to donate back to your community, well, they aren't going to be interested because the community just shit all over them.

We still honor Stonewall in my city with a Stonewall Festival each July. They shut down the main drive and it's a big celebration.
