He sent this to Ashley. When she asked how it was done here is his first response:

Hi Ashley,

How does the crystal ball work?

The first thought that comes to me is that with millions of computers
connected together through the internet, they have become a new life form
capable of reading and maybe even controlling our thoughts. It's really
kind of scary.

However, there may be other answers. I'll think about it and let you know
tomorrow if there might be another answer.

Love,

Grandpa

It's scary. Run. Run away. Fast.

That is pretty cute. Since I am a total math geek...I went ahead and found out the "magic" behind this trick.

When you chose any two digit number, let's say (10x + y), and subtract the sum from it you get this:

(10x+y) - (x + y)

=10x + y - x - y
= 9x

Therefore, your number can only be a multiple of 9. And if you look at the symbols, you'll notice that every multiple of 9 has the same symbol.

Yeah what threw me was that every time a person trys again the symbols change and I hadn't really paid attenion to that:glugglug

It's simple, they all are divisible by nine. Now look at every symbol 2x9,3x9,4x9 They are all the same. When you refresh they just pick a different symbol.
