Anyone here own an actual 50 MPG car?

I've owned a lot of vehicles over the years, muscle cars, motorcycles, various sedans and trucks. Some got good gas mileage most didn't. I've got the urge to get a new car and was considering trying a hybrid.

After a little research it seems Toyota, Ford and Honda all have class action lawsuits against them based on unrealistic MPG claims. Anyone here have a real 50 MPG car?

Volvo S60 - diesel

50 MPG if I drive very Very careful

_Richard_ 07-05-2013 10:11 AM

it's all bullshit. the word 'estimated' basically discounts everything

if you have a heavy foot driver, kinda doesn't matter what you drive

love diesel.

1 gallon of water on every 50 miles

Ferus 07-05-2013 10:19 AM

BMW 520/320D and Mercedes E200 CDI Blue Efficiency does that

Harmon 07-05-2013 10:20 AM

go buy an old school 90s VW Golf - they were doing 50+ back in the 90s... but of course that went away... then 30+ became that.

Fuckin cunts...

Ferus 07-05-2013 10:22 AM

The Mercedes A, B and C models (diesel engine) are all 50+ mpg
The little B220 CDI with 7 speed dual clutch transmission is a great city car, but if you need more space, check the C220 CDi

Vendzilla 07-05-2013 10:25 AM

I ride my Harley a lot, great mileage
I just sold an 81 VW diesel pickup that got 45 mpg on the highway
Current Pickup gets about 19 on a good day

The new Dodge Dart gets 41, pretty impressive looking
The new Chevy Cruze with a Diesel is saying 46 highway

k0nr4d 07-05-2013 10:25 AM

I manage to get approx 26mpg with both my X5 3.0 Diesel and M3 4.0 V8 outside of the city. We had a 120D before that got around 45-47 area. One of my workers has a 318d (143hp) that he managed to get to over 50mpg but that's driving like a bitch outside of the city (not highway, just country roads)

Edit: Our highway mileage differs from what you'd see in the US - limit here is 140kph and typical speed on highway here is 160-170kph or even 200+ in some places.

Rochard 07-05-2013 10:34 AM

I don't drive much so it's not a big deal for me...

Unfortunately that is down to the way the standard test is carried out and a lot of the cars that concentrate on fuel economy are designed around doing well in the test with no way to replicate the same mpg in real world driving. Would be far better if there was a set of stars like when you buy a washing machine and a car just got 4/10 or 9/10 as a fuel economy rating for comparing which one to buy.

Years ago my parents owned a number of cheap VW's that got great REAL mpg stats (diesel Rabbits). 30 mpg to me is shit also. I have a turbo diesel Chevy 2500 that gets low 20's why do small econo cars only get 10 mpg more?

baddog 07-05-2013 10:52 AM

In 1982 my parents had a VW Rabbit diesel that he assured me got 50 MPG when he let me take it to TX. I never got close to that. My 86 Heritage got 50 MPG when I was riding down I-75 because of all the cops

pimpmaster9000 07-05-2013 11:07 AM

my citroen c3 1.6 HDI does 70mpg on the road and approx 60mpg in heavy traffic...I am the happiest guy in the world because my former car did a whopping 22mpg :1orglaugh and my boat does like 30 gallons an hour :1orglaugh

crockett 07-05-2013 11:11 AM

We used to have a 80s something VW diesel truck that got 40mpg on average.

potter 07-05-2013 11:32 AM

My Audi A3 TDI (Diesel) is rated at 42 - I'm a heavy footed driver and get 36 on average. Friggin love not being worried about gas prices. Shit could go up to $8/gallon and it wouldn't bother me a bit.

dyna mo 07-05-2013 11:37 AM

i've been helping my mom on a similar hunt, we're having a difficult time justifying the hybrid premium on the one hand and on the other, the lack of attractive diesels available where she lives. she doesn't dirve the wheels off her cars but still wants really good mileage.

arock10 07-05-2013 11:41 AM

working from home and rarely driving is my contribution to the environment, don't really care what MPG I use

Choopa_Pardo 07-05-2013 11:41 AM

I am wary abut the VW and Audi TDI engines due to the injector problems I have read about. they seem to go bad quite frequently.

Barry-xlovecam 07-05-2013 11:43 AM

NO :1orglaugh

http://3mp1r3.cam500.com/bmg/ram-v10-2500/DSCI0420.JPG

But I only drive it occasionally ...

I have a Smart car..the no frills model. Since day one it's averaged 44.7 and it doesn't get driven softly. If someone tried I am sure it could get real close to 50.

How much does it cost you to run that lambo per say 100km when you factor in fuel, brakes, tires etc? I have to change the rear tires on my m3 with each oil change pretty much - i suspect you have to do the same?

RebelR 07-05-2013 12:36 PM

My VW TDI gets 42mpg Highway. Just running around.. its about 37 Gets just over 1000 km per tank

Any injector issues?

DVTimes 07-05-2013 12:40 PM

buy an old 306.

they run on fresh air (almost).

if you get a deasel you can run them on cooking oil too.

cheap on parts.

If you run your car (Diesel) on cooking oil, it will smell like french fries all the time

I would have to estimate...quite a bit.
The Smart is clearly cheaper to operate.

nope.. actually, last year the injectors were swapped as part of a recall when I went for an emissions test. But it wasn't having any issues prior to that either. Its the 2.0 TDI, pretty bulletproof. I have a good local mechanic who only does VW/Audi cars. He looks after it quite well. My next car will also be a TDI, I think. Was holding out for Audi to bring a diesel out here in Canada, but doesn't seem like that's going to happen any time soon.

Magnetron 07-05-2013 02:34 PM

2001 Chevy Prism -> 39 highway mpg

candyflip 07-05-2013 02:49 PM

52 MPG 2009 Toyota Prius. My Dad is driving a 2013 and he gets about 60.

My buddy has the Prius that also works as an electric and he's pusing 90+ at the moment.

I don't believe that a single one of these vehicles are available in the US.

European cars with turbo diesels are getting very high mpg compared to US models. Minte's Smart Car for instance gets around 75 mpg vs 40 US.

yup, that's the problem. we don't get a variety of the new generation diesels in the usa.

Which is what I said, no? :winkwink:

You can get a Jetta TDi, if you're lucky enough to find one. That's about it.

I had a '78 Ford Fiesta that got in the 45-50mpg area out on the highway. Sucks that they are just getting back to mpg numbers that they were at 40 years ago.

My Heritage gets somewhere between 40 and 45 most of the time.

I'm happy with my 12.4 mpg city driving.

Love the 500hp.

paffie 07-06-2013 06:04 AM

My Peugeot 206 does 60 mpg. I'm on the road pretty often, and gass prices in belgium are so high it's to expensive for me to own a less eficient car.

dappz-datton 07-06-2013 08:10 AM

cool wat a cool 50 MPG car.....

ErectMedia 07-06-2013 09:30 AM

2010 Honda Fit Sport with a few k in accessories added, rated 27/32 MPG.
I live in clusterfuck land combined with a heavy foot I usually don't get 27 in the city maybe 23-24, I added a K&N air intake so I traded a few MPG for quicker take off/acceleration. I have driven it to florida 3-4 times and on cruise blows past the rated 32 and usually gets high thirty to 40+. So I lose in the city but gain on the highway so it averages out to ratings. I'm not a fan of hybrid as I think the increase in repair bills will offset any advantage. Just grab a small gas car honda, toyota, nissan as repairs will be cheaper and high twenties to high thirties MPG is good enough. :2 cents:

MPG ratings are if you push the gas slow, coast to stoplights etc... When coming from a 350 motor to a 4 cylinder it would be very hard to drive it like a grandma. I floor my honda multiple times a day.

Evil1 07-06-2013 10:48 AM

my old man had a 97ish 3 cylinder geo metro that got around 50, coincidentally that was also the speed it topped out at.
