Roxy II :::

Hi gang, here's a few more shots of Roxy from our recent Twistys shoot. Shot at ISO 2000 with a Canon 5D Mark II
and a Canon 100-400mm lens. Available light except for the accent/rim light which was a 1000 watt tungsten
spotlight (Lowel DP Light). Hope you like and am happy to answer any questions about the pics : )

could you chat a bit about how you achieved that white balance? also which plugins do you use for post-production for these pics? i like the warm tones, not too warm/gold.

thx

Sure man!

First I always take one shot with a white balance card like this one!

Then in post (Adobe Camera Raw), I'll do a white balance on the white or gray patch, whichever one I like best. That gives me a neutral balance by removing any color casts. From there I'll usually just add a bit of saturation to pump up the tones and move on. But for this set, I actually toned down the saturation and then pushed up the warmth by adjusting the white balance slider.

As far as plugins, I'm a plugin whore. I have so many plugins it's embarrassing. But for these sample shots, I didn't use any of them. When I develop them for Twistys, I may run them through a few though.

The shots that I post on the boards usually look a little different then what I send in to Twistys because their members are very particular about what they want. Anything that even hints of art, they'll bitch & whine like a bunch of lil' babies. So I try to keep that stuff pretty straight forward. But for stuff that I Tweet & Tumblr out and what I may post on the boards, I'll spent a few minutes doing some fun stuff to them :thumbsup

Glad you liked the shots!!!

Nice shots Dean. How's the noise at full res? 5DII handle ISO 2000 well?

I'd like to shoot more natural light because I love the feel. But my cheap camera can't handle it :) I get above ISO 400 and I'm screwed lol

Noise isn't bad at all. I heard it was even better on the 5D Mark III but I'm happy with the Mark II's. Also, there are some really beautiful noise reduction plugins for Photoshop that you can use on your shots if you think they're too noisy. My favorite (and I've tried them all) is Neat Image. It's a little tricky to use but there some tutorials on the site :thumbsup

Yep, just take a picture with that card for each set that you shoot. Bring that pic up in your develop software (Lightroom, Camera Raw etc..) and use the eyedropper/white-balance tool on the white or grey patch and that'll give you a very neutral white balance. From there, you may want to slightly adjust the WB to make it warmer or you may be happy with how it looks. Hit me up anytime if you have any questions - happy to help!!!

right on. i've used my grey card before, but just to take a pic of it to set the white balance in camera. that was with my previous camera, i have a d600 now and it does really well on auto white balance, i'm pretty surprised actually, even in mixed light. even so, i am going to use this method for post, at least to just check.

:thumbsup

Have you tried the Passport Color Checker? Pretty cool little tool. Basically does the same thing. I like the profile you can create in Lightroom. Makes colors pop a little more than the standard camera profile.

The problem with auto white balance is that within a set of a hundred shots (a set), the color may fluctuate from warm to cool depending on where you aim the lens. By locking the white balance in or using the method that I described above, you're whole set of pics will be the same temp. Same with auto exposure. On auto exposure, you're pics may be lighter or darker depending on where you point the camera so for shooting a set of pics where you want consistency in exposure, it's always good to lock in the exposure instead of using auto. You may know this already but wanted to mention in case someone else may not :thumbsup

well, i am somewhat familiar with it and it's a problem for me, i also struggle with the same problem with lighting. i get lights all set and then if i move a bit, the dang lighting is off!

i'm going to handle the wb setting on my next shoot for sure.

I'm seeing it more and more so I'd say yes on that one. I think the default is still totally shaved but it's always exciting to see a girl who has a little hair down there :thumbsup
