Webmaster suicides

Reading this thread, I got the impression that quite a few webmasters here are either heavily depressed or just plain unhappy. So, I wonder what the webmaster suicide rate is. Think it's higher than the normal rate?

XXXPaysiteDesign 02-26-2003 12:51 PM

I'm holding a gun to my head right now. Somebody stop me.

hahaha

I don't know as depressed or unhappy is accurate. In this business if you don't work 12+ hours a day, you're not going to be successful. It's something we have all chosen. I could quit what I do and get a real job, hang out with friends after their measly little 8 hour day, and get a life. Right now, money is more important to me.

If you have time to be depressed, you aren't busy enough.

CDSmith 02-26-2003 12:55 PM

I'm betting depression is much more prevalent with webmasters, what with the isolation that can occur, not to mention the ignorant masses that tend to judge first and ask questions later....... but suicide? Naw, we should all be too busy to think that way.

A few surprise/extra signups in anyone's stats should be motivation enough to keep them thinking positive.

i've been depressed. i used to be really active as a kid before i got my computer in 6th grade, then once that happened i got WAY too addicted and basically dropped all my friends and stuck on the computer 7 hours a day... and it was like that all the way up to 10th grade, then i realized wtf... i changed a ton due to the isolation. it was pretty bad cause i had a hard time associating with people, i was real passive and quiet... then i started forcing myself to go out and socialize with people more even though i disliked it.. .so by 11th grade i was basically fine and now i've grown a mentality where i'm a bit too open and speak my mind a bit too much. it all worked out for the best though. :winkwink:

I think many of us have the same situation. It is very hard balancing self employment and a social life. Always have to keep on top of things and the work never ends.

Most of the time friends are just a pain in the ass, so its real easy to shift the time youd spend with friends into work.

I think the best thing is to just develop a couple close friendships, and also take a couple vacations a year to keep the mind clear.

"Well, what do you wanna hear, man?! Do you wanna hear that sometimes I think about eatin' a bullet?! Huh? Well, I do! I even got a special bullet for the occasion with a hollow point, look! Make sure it blows the back of my goddamned head out and do the job right! Every single day I wake up and I think of a reason not to do it! Every single day! You know why I don't do it?! This is gonna make you laugh! You know why I don't do it?! The job! Doin' the job! Now that's the reason!"

I only hold a gun to my head when I shave.. to keep from cuttin my own throat.. :)

lustbin 02-26-2003 06:42 PM

I do this and I have a day job. Christ, I don't have time to be depressed.

My only "trick" is friday I work from home and double-time it, and go out that night with a couple of friends, play video games, get drunk, and go dancing. Also, get up and walk around every once in awhile. Or, better yet, get 30-40 minutes of cardio exercise in every day. Keep that blood flowing.

Take an evening every week and just let the online world fuck the hell off for awhile.

yeah, but the payoff is so much better. work your ass off for a few short years with no life, and spend the rest of your time doing whatever you please while you watch everyone else still killing themselves 9-5.
