El garífuna, hablado por los caribes negros o garinagu (plural de garífuna) es un idioma de orígen amerindio, que se deriva de las lenguas Igneri (del grupo arawak) y kalibi (del grupo caribe), y tiene una fuerte influencia de los idiomas africanos, así como del frances ,el inglés y el español. En la lengua caribe de la Isla San Vicente existía una división linguística basado en el género (masculino, femenino), las mujeres siempre fueron portadoras de la lengua arawak dentro del grupo caribe rojo, lo que se refleja hasta hoy en la lengua garífuna, en la cual el habla de la mujer difiere del hombre. Este aspecto se conserva de cierta forma en la actualidad.
