?At this point it is important to know that my house has central heating. I have it configured to blow hot air out on the ground floor and take it in at the second floor to take advantage of the fact that heat rises.?

This suggests the weather was cold because they were sleeping with the heating system on.

?It's trajectory took it straight into the ceiling fan which whipped it about the room at terrifying velocity.?

This suggests the weather was hot because they were sleeping under an operating ceiling fan.
:question

Actually, a lot of people use the ceiling fan in the winter. Most fans have a switch that controls the blade rotation direction. One setting is appropriate for winter, the other for summer. A fan can pull the warmer air down from the ceiling.
