How do you get your videos to seek past the buffer point?

I'd like to enable viewers to have the option of just clicking whatever part of the video bar so they can watch from that exact point of the movie that they click on, just like how youtube does it. As of now the whole video has to load for them to do that or they can just click at whatever point has already loaded.

Obviously this sucks because some of my scenes can reach a half hour. Is there some kind of software I need to get for this or some settings I need to toggle?

I see a lot of people use wowza especially if they have live streaming. If I'm going to be allowing live streaming is wowza the best way to go or are their better alternatives?

lighttpd :)

Google "moov atom"

If running Linux, install qt-faststart and write a little script to batch process your videos.

e.g.

We use Wowza in our members areas as well. Works great.

how many visitors do you have?

if millions - go streaming server

if not - use pseudo streaming

http://h264.code-shop.com/trac

i use that in my shop as well

but you need to encode the mp4 files correctly for that in "streaming mode"

Exactly right.

I don't mess with Wowza unless there's a lot of traffic. I use the mp4 streaming module for apache and mod_auth_token to prevent hotlinking - https://code.google.com/p/mod-auth-token/

Thanks for the input. Which would be best to use if I wanted to avoid using flash so people with apple products can stream on them?

MaDalton 06-25-2013 04:29 PM

i have never mentioned any flash

Barry-xlovecam 06-25-2013 04:34 PM

HTTP Live Streaming (also known as HLS)

I'm not sure what you're asking. Just don't use flash.

Sorry, English isn't my first language and I word my sentences weird sometimes. Just want to be sure that all the options mentioned will be able to run on Apple products.

They'll run on anything. I personally use jwplayer. http://www.longtailvideo.com/jw-player/

HTML5 playback by default but in the event it isn't supported it'll fall back to flash.

Have a look to this article: "Seeking videos beyond the buffer line".

1stdev.com/tremendum-transcoder/articles/seeking-videos-beyond-the-buffer-line/

Also our program makes it ultra simple converting the videos to a suitable format for pseudo-straming. Just upload and one mouse click to do the encoding in your server.
