Search engines such as Google should do more to restrict access to online pornography, a government adviser on child internet safety has said.

John Carr says internet companies should block links which paedophiles use to find pictures of abuse.

It comes after a court heard April Jones's murderer Mark Bridger searched for child abuse and rape images.

Campaigners backed the call as Google said it has a "zero tolerance" policy to child sexual abuse content.

Mr Carr, a member of the government's Council on Child Internet Safety, said Google and other search engines should reset their default search setting to the safest option - blocking access to legal as well as illegal sexual images.

Those wanting to reach such material would have to register to search for other content, which would deter many from doing so, he argued.

Mr Carr told BBC Radio 4's Today programme internet search engines did prevent access to web addresses that contain child abuse images.

But he said one of the "key routes" paedophiles used to find content was through adverts containing "code words" that are placed on legal hardcore pornography sites.

He said: "Google's moral leadership is essential here. They are the biggest player in this space in the world. If they did it, I think others would have to follow."

Reminds me of people who want to provide children with healthy eating options. What in the fuck does that mean? When a child earns money and has to go purchase food then come back and we'll talk about it. Until then you provide your child with their food or you're negligent. Porn is too profitable for Google to block it or they already would have done so. Their motto is, "don't be evil." Larry Page has publicly stated he hates porn. Yet Google doesn't block it?

I think this will happen eventually where if you want to search for porn sites you will have to register as they have been doing it with dongles and mobile phone contracts for a long time now.

If Google required you to register an account to search or even view porn images/videos, would that not also remove their safe harbor making them liable for the content they show and link out too?

How would Google verify the person registering is truly of legal age?

Well you need to have a certified google + account, then send a copy of your identity card and you need also to send a copy of your health care contract (to make sure that you are not addicted to porn)

I completely agree... if there's a demand and need for a child safe internet, then someone should create one. The internet, as it is now, was never intended or envisioned to be child safe.

The only thing real pedos perhaps do, is to make fake teenager accounts to flirt real teenagers in social networks. I am unsure how you could filter this bad practice from search engines, in fact, you can't?

It is true the (legal) porn is easy to get. Governments could impose search engines and ISPs to have a chinese or islamic country style firewall on keywords and images. In Saudi Arabia and most arabic countries, they already need proxies (or Tor) to access legal porn , since ISPs can not operate otherwise. I got several paying customers from arabic countries who need to access from proxies, they have no other choice. Perhaps in a future this will include guys from UK.
