Autobahn and speedlimits

On the weekend I spent about 5 hours in a car. In a relative fast car on a German autobahn. It is actually a really good system that in my eyes works. Some stretches have no speed limit, do 300 if you can, but then when a 130 km/h zone comes, everybody slows down to that.

I believe letting people drive fast is a good thing and from what I have seen 95% do the speedlimit when it is posted. They slow down from 250 to 130, because they know around the next corner, the speed limit is lifted again.

OK........:1orglaugh

Over here we are lucky if we can do 80.. 100 is our max limit and very rare. No wonder though, cus our roads are so damn poor it's barely safe ;) i fucking hate my country man :ak47:

They are supposed to begin testing dynamic speed limits here.

So they can change depending on weather etc. That seems to be a pretty good idea.

Word is the max speed is supposed to be raised to something like 140 on some roads when the conditions are good.

Atleast it's better than that 110 that's max now.

Sweden is awesome.. im gonna move there soon!

mostly a mix of 100kmh and 110kmh roads here.

though in the northern territory they have no limits highways, not a bad idea when it can be 400km between towns

m0rph3us 02-25-2003 01:10 AM

Vancouver sucks. 90km/h highway (56mph) on the HIGHWAY !!!

MetaMan 02-25-2003 01:21 AM

just keep women and asians off the road,

all women i know admit they suck at driving, drive by on the freeway and look into the car driving half the speedlimit its one or the other

NEXT!

Ted 02-25-2003 01:38 AM

There is a bit of a difference between the german autobahn system and the northern territory highways.

Most of the roads are just two lanes with no middle barrier, a head on collision would be a disaster. and some of the roads aren't even surfaced !

I just moved back to Germany.. to work for CoolSpot... from Canada, Vancouver.

There, the max on Vancouver Island is 110 km/h, no wonder... kids race around wherever. They don't have a place to drive fast.

I mean fact is... most new cards other then maybe the Smart Cars... can go faster then 150 km/h.

In Canada, I know as a fact there are some Highways, where one could drive 250 with no risk at all. So why not let people drive the way a car was built in certain areas. Not downtown Vancouver.

Triple 6 02-25-2003 02:47 AM

is there some place in montana (USA) with no speed limits? Or did I dream that?

I think most people slow down because they don't want to get a speeding ticket... I just got one this week :ak47:

But the German Autobahn rules :thumbsup

Validus 02-25-2003 02:54 AM

haha, yea speeding tickets are a big factor as well, but I think they are more willing to slow down then if they had a German car that can go 320, but can never drive it.

I Dunno, maybe giving people a little more responsibility makes can make them more responsible... I hope, I made sense.

Roald 02-25-2003 03:14 AM

Aren't most german cars limited at 250 when you buy one?

chodadog 02-25-2003 03:19 AM

Heh, my dad went over to Germany quite a few years ago, for some contract work he was doing. The guy he was working with took him out on the autobahn in his M5. Very.. very.. fast was how he described it. He used to race formula ford open wheelers, so if he says something is fast, i take him at his word.

funkmaster 02-25-2003 03:21 AM

"Aren't most german cars limited at 250 when you buy one?"

... they are indeed, but you can get the chip reprogrammed, so the car thinks it is doing "-70" at standstill, this way you can go as fast as 320 (if the car is built for that) ... Iīve never gone faster than 250 myself, so I canīt tell you how 320 would feel like ...

Yea, people are still talking about those days :)

Validus 02-25-2003 10:11 AM

QuaShe: no they aren't. I think most people would be pissed when they buy a Porsche and it says 320 on the speedo and the thing cuts out at 250. I know for a fact that Porsches and most MB's don't have speed limiations under 300. well... The Benz I drive can only go 260.

ldinternet 02-25-2003 10:17 AM

I drove 45mph all the way home in a 70 zone (motorway) today, feeling pretty ill. :repuke

Trucks were overtaking me. It's like, what the fuck? Now I'm in bed, sick, reading GFY on a shitty old laptop. And I have tomorrow off. :D Sure beats the rush hour...

Yes they are limited for sure. You can check any specs page of BMW, MB etc. and you'll always find: Max speed 250 km/h. It's an agreement between the companies.

Like funkmaster said, it is possible to remove the limitation though.

Validus 02-25-2003 11:46 AM

PatrickM: well I guess the new Mercedes S500 sitting infront of this building can't go 260 although the owner has driven it. He also said u could get the limit taken off, and it would go about 280.

Also, I know as a fact my dads Porsche GT2 does 310. And that is driving from the German Porsche dealership to Turkey.

Anyhow, speedlimitation. are not as stated on web sites. U are more then welcome to come visit me... hehehehe

I love driving fast.

J B 02-25-2003 01:25 PM

Porsche is the only German car company that doesn't have any limit. All other German cars are limited at 250 by default. Of course, you can get tuned models but usually not directly from the car manufacturer.
