The New York case is centered around a 2011 law that makes it illegal for New York residents to rent out a property for less than 29 days.

So basically he broke the law and got fined... might be a stupid law, but it seems he broke it just the same.

This is strange, because it is very big business in NY for people to rent apartment and then rent them out as hotel rooms for the weekend or for business men during the week. I had a lady that lived in my old building who rents out about 20+ apartments a month and does this.

Yea that does sound strange indeed, maybe it's not very known that the law exists (is rather new) and some hotel is behind reporting him or something.

It's like that in Miami as well, but i think not less than 6 months?

The hotels are fighting back. It makes sense that they are upset as they pay huge taxes etc to stay in business and now they are losing it to the guy with an extra den.

Yea. I know this happens often. My sister has 2 kids and when my parents come to visit, they typically find someones apartment online around the area for the weekend because there is no hotels within walking distance. She also lives in a heavily populated Hipster area. Where things like this are pretty common. I personally don't give a fuck if I am gone for a year. No one is sleeping in my bed ;)
