Just saw Star Trek. My take.

  • Opening is a ripoff of Indiana Jones. Guy is obsessed with Spielberg so no surprise here.
  • There's a scene at the end of Act 1 that's a ripoff of The Godfather 3. Similarities too overwhelming to overlook.
  • The rest of the movie is all action. Set piece after set piece. Big things and explosions.
  • The 'ticking time bomb' plot device is used all to often. After the 400th time it's used there is no urgency anymore.
  • Guy who plays Khan stole the show. If he's back for #3 than I'm in
  • Few plot holes, few cases of lazy writing. A scene in the beginning is put in there for no other reason than to set up the end. And a character is conveniently put away in order for another character to shine and return a favor. And it's done in the laziest possible way.

All in all it was a good take. Looking forward to see what can be done with Star Wars now. Hope it's more personality and less action though.

7 out of 10 from this movie snob

Edit: Maybe ripoff is too strong of a word. I'll say it was "inspired"

I'm not much into theaters either. Crowds more than anything else. So I went to an early show and it was worth it. Sound mix was amazing.

After a certain point in time... Everything has been done before.

Just got back from it. It ROCKED. If you are a Star Trek fan or an action movie fan you will love it. Period.

Me too...If the theater is going to be packed check out the Showcase Cinema de Lux. Nice big lazy boy type seats, beers & food etc. Well worth it. :thumbsup

I don't like theaters too, because I can't cheer or comment but had to go to see this.It is better then I was expecting, but still , too much unrealistic action compared to previous star trek movies and series.

pimpmaster9000 05-18-2013 02:07 AM

I'll probably see it but wait until it comes out on Netflix or something since I detest theaters. I really liked the first one which surprised me since I'm so not a Star Trek fan. J.J. really knows his stuff! Hopefully his Star Wars movies are as good.

JJ Abrams is the new Spielberg....early Spielberg.

AliceInBondageLand 05-18-2013 10:57 AM

Meh. It was still worth an opportunity to wear my star trek uniform in public. :-D

... but frankly I had a better time at the "best of both worlds" star trek next generation theatrical release a few weeks ago (the 2 part Borg episode remastered into movie-length).

2MuchMark 05-18-2013 07:45 PM

Wow young, you must hate movies.

The latest Trek is AWESOME. It is as good as the first one if not better. Don't worry I won't spoil it for anyone. If you like Star Trek, you'll love this movie. It's made to entertain everyone but there are plenty of nods and winks to the serious star trek Geek (like me).

Oh and it's definitely worth paying the $20.00 to see it in IMAX 3D. Even though it was a 2D to 3D Conversion it was still excellent 3D.

THAT was awesome. Did you see the back-to-back episodes they did for the release of Season One? I love that they are doing those releases to coincide with DVD releases of the series :)
