Arizona Climber And His Dog Apparently Stung To Death By Bees.

Holy shit. :Oh crap

Quote:

(Reuters) - An Arizona climber has been found dead, dangling from a rope on a cliff face south of Tucson, after apparently being stung to death by bees, police said on Wednesday.

Steven Wallace Johnson, 55, a counselor with some 30 years experience hiking and climbing, headed into the mountains south of Tucson on Friday, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

Johnson was reported missing on Monday by co-workers after he failed to show up for work. A Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team found his body that afternoon, Estrada said. "He had been stung repeatedly and he was dangling there," he said.

"He was climbing the cliff and was about 70 feet up and still had about 80 feet to go, so he really didn't have anywhere to go when he was attacked by this swarm of bees," Estrada said.

He said Johnson's dog had also been attacked by bees and was found dead nearby.

The Pima County Medical Examiner's Office was conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of Johnson's death.

Imortyl Pussycat 05-16-2013 04:01 PM

eww, bees are one of my worst nightmares. i'm sure the poor pup didn't want to leave his owner when he was being attacked, the dog could have survived if he had run away...that's loyalty :(

Bladewire 05-16-2013 04:43 PM

At least they weren't attacked by a swarm of tracker jackers :2 cents:

But seriously what a way to die and that poor dog damn!

Yeah I agree had to be some kind of contraption like that.

There is a thread dedicated to Steven Wallace, the climber, on Mountain Project Forum here.

In the thread people who knew him posted some pics.

This is him and a friend, the climber who died is the one on the bottom.

Socks 05-16-2013 08:55 PM

Have they tracked down the bees and killed them to make sure they don't hurt anyone else?

man their hard to track down. depending on the size of the hive they could swarm several times a week. killer bees are nomadic

Damn, I just got back from a bike ride where I got stung on the lip. Fucking painful ... I imagine that would be a terrible way to die.

Rochard 05-17-2013 08:58 AM

When we were kids one summer during a pool party in our back yard, my brother was throwing a beach ball up in the air under a tree by our pool. Turns out there was a huge bee's nest, it fell, and cracked open on his head. He go stun like thirty times.

Ouch.

I ran over a yellow jacket nest when I was a kid and the fuckers stung the shit out of my legs. I had dozens of stings and, man, it royally sucked. Horrible pain. I really feel for this guy and his poor dog. Death by bee sting is a truly horrible death.

Scott McD 05-18-2013 12:14 PM

I remember years ago when i was golfing with a friend, a wasp got under his t-shirt, and stung the FUCK out of him, all the way up his chest. Can't remember the exact amount of times he got stung, but it was more than a few.

I only got the wasp off him when i saw it appear at his neck, and i hit it with a golf club... :1orglaugh

The mental image of somebody hitting a wasp off of their friend's neck with a fucking golf club. Too funny.
