Awesome video, truly. Been lucky enough to have been able to have this perspective for a couple of years now, and my life is immeasurably better for it :thumbsup

Not really - it's more about E+R=O where Event + Response = Outcome. So in the example of being in a queue, pissed off, every cunt taking their time, the event is the queue, and your response, whether it be pissed off-ness > anger > rage > etc; or ok what's the very very *worst* thing that can happen here, or ok, that old lady taking fucking ages at the checkout might be having her only human contact for the week, or 'insert blah blah here' equals the outcome, which is either a good feeling (calmness) or a bad feeling (bad temperedness) which then has a knock-on effect for the next 10 minutes (whether you get out the car when the guy cuts you up, or whether you just let the guy carry on his way), and that has a knock-on effect when you get in and either snap at your kids for being noisy, or share their enthusiasm in seeing you, and so on and so on.

That's obviously just 1 example, and may not even strike a chord, but I can't be bothered to type more examples lol. I was a fucking angry, raging, cunt, who was so focused on every other cunt in my way, or obstructing my day somehow, that my default setting was: the world is full of cunts. It still *is* full of cunts, kinda, but I don't have to be one as well these days :)

dyna mo 05-11-2013 08:45 AM

about the author:::::

Three years before he hanged himself at age 46 on the patio of the ranch house in Claremont, Calif., that he shared with his wife, Karen Green, David Foster Wallace gave the commencement address to graduating seniors at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. In the aftermath of his suicide last September, a transcript of the address zinged around the Web like a talisman.

Guess I just grew up a bit, to cut a very long story short. I still revert back to old type plenty, especially here at this board lol, so I'm not gonna pretend hey look at me aren't I great or anything, all I'll say is some of the stuff I've read, plus some of the stuff I practice, means I'm for the most part, very happy, content, have a lot more peace of mind, and am hopefully a more contributing part of my family & friends' lives.

Sounds very wishy-washy and tree hugger-esque I realise, but meh, it is what it is :)

well it's not really about being kind as such - I've never had a problem with that. It's a very subtle difference in thinking, but a truly huge difference in terms of how I 'enjoy' life (for want of a better word) now, compared to before :)

I see and enjoy your posts here, so I *know* you're brighter than to think depression can't set in suddenly and massively upon someone who up until that point was pretty much fine :upsidedow

To also look at it another way, if you really haven't ever suffered depression, or someone close to you hasn't, if a rapist says it's wrong to rape, is it wrong or right?

same to you as well.

i don't disagree with his message, i think it's very similar to what ferris summed up, as silly as that may sound. it's just the exact opposite motivator on the same thing. maybe i like the tongue-in-cheek form of therapy.....

and i see your point about rapid onset of depression.

maye his depression angle is what rings true about his speech. the guy is an award winning author, so he is relatable. and i've had varying degrees of depression at one time or another and i would imagine we all experience some amount of it at some point(s) in our lives, if not continually.

Jel 05-11-2013 10:02 AM

gotcha :) and yeah agreed on the depression stuff :)

i'm in maintenance mode these days, it's crazy hard to stay at ~7% body fat to keep them showing, fortunately though, after all the training, i don't have to spend a lot of time exercising these days and still hover around 10-11% bf. i've got a tropical vaca planned this summer though, thinking about peeling a layer off for that though.

what's up out that way?

PiracyPitbull 05-11-2013 10:40 AM

Good video, thanks for posting it :thumbsup

mineistaken 05-11-2013 04:14 PM

So to sum it up - consider others' feelings and don't be quick in becoming angry about the situation, try to be calm and positive. Sounds like everyday me, although sometimes I like to snap a bit once in a while as well.
