What is the Difference Between Managed or Unmanaged Server?

I understand unmanaged means they won't install wordpress for you or move your sites around. But at over $100+/month/server extra what else would I be paying for with that?

baddog 05-09-2013 12:39 PM

Software updates and patches.

depends on the companies definition of "managed" but usually means you don't have to know shit as they do initial hardening, security/software updates, monitor and will install shit for ya as well, lot of common scripts can be auto installed if ya have Fantastico or Softaculous.

Software patches for linux? Is anything beyond "sudo apt-get update" needed for that?

baddog 05-09-2013 12:46 PM

If you don't think you need managed, don't get it.

Nah, real sysadmins don't do any updates or even reboots... That's for pussies. :upsidedow

Well that command would only update your package lists, not the OS or apache, mySQL etc...

Thanks shake, that's what I'm tying to find out. I don't know if I need it or not, that's why I'm asking. I don't know what it covers specifically. I know I pay for it, then something starts acting up, and I have to send a bunch of tickets and it still doesn't get fixed. This is usually how my business with all my former hosts have gone, and I'm in the market again.

If you're asking if you need managed or not, you need it. :2 cents:

To me, its 'Peace Of Mind'...

I'm not techie at all... So I am happy to pay extra and know that there is a tech at the end of an email, who will do shit when and as is needed...

I'm sorry you've had issues at your past providers. If you can shoot me an email over to [email protected] with your requirements Ill see what I can put together for you! :thumbsup

Phil, I've been in touch with you the last week. With how fast you got back to me, plus the performance I've seen from other sites on your network. I'm definitely considering your services. I have your quote and another for an unmanaged server with one of my previous hosts, as well. I should have a decision by next week.

Choopa Phil 05-09-2013 01:27 PM

Sounds great, If you need anything in the meantime please feel free to reach out to me. I am almost always accessible via email.

"managed hosting" means different things to different hosts. I see lots of hosts claim to be managed but then give you a CPanel, which to me means you're still doing quite a bit of the management.

Other hosts, similar to us, do everything for you. We, in essence, become your personal system administrators and do everything for you except build your site. We manage backups, monitoring, and handle any request you have, from adding domains to installing complicated programs, setting up clusters, load balancing, etc - whatever it is you need. That is "managed" if you ask me :thumbsup

Feel free to hit us up at sales AT nationalnet DOT com if you have further questions or if we can do anything for you.
