... so I just got a phone call from "Microsoft" warning me my computer had a virus

Lol!! Indian scammers....

I just received a phone call from a guy named "Dave" with a seriously strong indian accent, in a noise room with at least 50 or so other indian guys named Dave, telling me he was technical support from Microsoft and that they had "detected" that my computer had a bad virus.

I played along to learn what the scam was.

He told me to press the Windows key + the R key to bring up "Run" in windows and got me to launch the windows event viewer. He then told me to scroll through the applications to find any with a "RED X ERROR" or "YELLOW: WARNING" message. Sure enough there were a few but these of course are only windows errors that mean nothing special.

Indian "Dave" told me they were infected files and that I was in big trouble of losing all of my data and infecting other computers, and that I needed to fix it right away before being arrested. Oh noes!

He tried to get me to run a few different programs that would give him access to my computer and to go to a few different websites but I kept telling him that Norton was blocking me from doing anything. He got more and more frustrated but I didn't want him to stop, so I kept thanking him for all of the viruses he was making me find.

In the end he asked me to go to a website which I did not go to of course, but instead I decided to Google the name. Try Googling "Fastsupport scam" to learn more.

Anyway, DAVE, If you're reading this, Go Fuck Yourself! For anyone else with friends or relatives who may be a little slow on the up-tick, warn them not to accept calls from Indians who call themselves Dave.

The one I read not to long ago they make you pay some $300 for this software or tell you they will deactivate your computer and Internets forever

baddog 05-03-2013 02:19 PM

Interesting; I got a similar call yesterday. I told the chick to fuck off and hung up. If they call back, I will play along.

fitzmulti 05-03-2013 02:20 PM

Pay the local cops enough, It is. Cops in those regions don't really care about rich people in some foreign land.

Scammers know no country boundaries. Recently I got the good ol' "internet trademark in China".

Scott McD 05-03-2013 03:27 PM

I love playing along with them.

Listening to them talk BS for ages, then after a while just tell them to get fucked.

I wish I could have recorded the last call i had from one of them...

grumpy 05-03-2013 03:30 PM

I am calling "not full story".

Does anybody believe for one minute that Mark Prince had somebody on the phone and did not try to sell him a live cam network license? :)

epitome 05-04-2013 01:07 AM

Thread forwarded to Dave.

facialfreak 05-04-2013 03:37 PM

That's the least of your worries .... they have upped the ante in the scam recently ...

They LOCK your computer, and turn on your webcam, so you are looking at yourself, and they tell you that they are the RCMP or FBI and that ILLEGAL OBSCENE MATERIALS have been found on your computer, and in order to unlock your computer, you must buy a $100 U-Kash card and pay an online fine ...

Next time chat with Dave for a minute or two and say "sooo, Dave, what are you wearing?"

Zeiss 05-05-2013 03:05 PM

Next time Dave calls you, tell him you see "Fatal Error: Found MS-Windows System -> Repartitioning Disk for Linux..." on your screen, you can't remove it and you don't know what to do.

marlboroack 05-05-2013 03:57 PM

I would have fucked with his head then push him to kill himself a few years down the road.

No. You would have said that you can help him sell his software through your worldwide offices.

MainstreamGuy 05-05-2013 05:26 PM

Looks legit.

Major (Tom) 05-05-2013 05:28 PM

i wonder how will they react if i start up linux in virtual box and give them access.

Dankasaur 05-05-2013 09:32 PM

I got one of those once... I'm a Mac user so I fucked with them and did what they said, but instead of using cmd prompt I typed it into the Spotlight of OS X... He tried to get me to install some software for him to control my computer, but of course they're all Windows programs and .exe don't run on Mac, so I gave him shit about it not installing blah blah blah, finally I convinced him to check a screenshot I took of me typing into the Spotlight "You're an idiot." using a image host with a really long obscure url and made him read it back to me like 10 times before I confirmed it as correct... He hung up.

Social networking at it's best. People fall for that all day long. They can't stop it. Stupid people are always victims.
