Husky voices are 'most sexy', scientists find
 

I've always thought husky voices were hot in chicks. I don't like little girl voices - it's annoying.

"Women like Marilyn Monroe have been found to have the most attractive voices, with a high-pitched but breathy quality, according to research.

The balance has been associated with a ?small body size?, making women attractive but not threatening.

Men, on the other hand, were found to be most appealing when they had deep, husky voices.

The perfect balance, scientists at UCL found, was a voice showing men were large enough to be attractive but not aggressive.

?What we found is that for males listening to females, they preferred the voice to be high-pitched ? although not too high ? and as breathy as possible,? Dr Yi Lu told the Times newspaper.

?These suggest a small body size. Marilyn Monroe would be a very good female example.?

He added women appeared to look for a partner who was physically large but not aggressive.

?It makes sense that females don?t like a male who is totally aggressive,? he said. ?The pitch indicates masculinity.

?However, breathiness, which is not associated with being large, moderates the aggressiveness.?

The research, which involved playing men and women taped voices from the opposite sex, has now been published in journal PLOS One.

Previous studies have found people subconsciously lower their voices when trying to woo attractive members of the opposite sex.

A 2010 study, by Albright College in Pennsylvannia, US, showed both men and women lower the pitch of the their voice when they want to signal that they are attracted to another person, researchers found.

The findings dispel the idea that women adopt a higher, more feminine tone when they find a man attractive, like the stereotype damsel in distress.

Instead, they are more likely to put on a husky voice such as that of the television presenter Mariella Frostrup or the actress Joanna Lumley.

Researchers said the ploy is of particular use when talking over the phone, or even in voicemail messages, where non- visual and non-verbal forms of flirting - such as fluttering eyelashes and wry smiles - will not work."

Simply put, if it was "sexy" to men, women would be talking that way to attract men. But they don't. They do commonly talk like dumb blond 15 year old, sexually vulnerable cheerleaders. So I think thats a pretty rock solid answer as to what attracts men to women when it comes to adapting speech for the purpose of attracting men.


Because it most often equates to sexual abuse as a child and being hyper-sexual as an adult. (i.e. stripper with little girls voice)

Also suggests someone is easily dominated. An abused child looking for a father figure to recreate that later in life and so on.

Quite bizarre but also supports my points to repeatedly refer to an emotionally disturbed woman as an example of what men are attracted to.

Women look for confidence as a primary trait, above all things. Confidence is conveyed by how one speaks, their tone etc but size also plays into ones confidence in themselves. Short men are rarely secure and confident.


The very point of that act "high voice", suggestive poses/postures, mannerisms, acting impossibly stupid etc etc is to attract male attention with slutty behavior It's not what all women do, it's what women who use sexuality to get male attention do.

Obviously, before there is attraction, their defenses are up and they act quite differently than when there is attraction and are careful not to indicate there is attraction by changing voice, posture, gestures etc etc etc etc.

I don't disagree, though. I like Stevie, and her voice is distinctive - and that's a good thing. Her voice has gotten deep and raspy like some other chicks who have been singing all their lives. Ann Wilson & Grace Slick come to mind. Deep & raspy from a lifetime of hard use. They're still great rock chicks, though, IMO.
