PHP progammers wanted - who is best?

I'm thinking about getting some PHP programming done and I was wondering what firms or individuals out there people like the best and what sort of rate range someone good would be happy with. Thanks for any suggestions you all may have.

I used to do some work with some of those guys and they still send me the mag, so I will certainly check out your column. I already wear a lot of hats, though, and I'm looking to delegate on this one. I want to outsource some PHP programming to someone who will do a really good job and I want to pay a rate that will make everyone happy. Any thoughts on what the appropriate rate range for good people with this skill set is? Or do I need to wait and read the article :winkwink:

Did you design the script yourself or modify someone elses?

There is a lot of confusion as to what PHP and MySQL actually requires. There are certainly a variety of different skill levels and knowledge as some people work in the field of installing and modifying pre-existing scripts and some develop entirely new applications. If someone gives you a quote, let me have a look at it. I don't intend to compete with the quote but I will give you a fair evaluation of the work that is required...that way you'll have a better guage to tell if you're getting ripped off or not. ICQ me for more details.

This is exactly the answer that most PHP people seem to give. That is why I also asked if anyone could tell me what a pleasing rate would be for good PHP people. Anyone?

Maybe it is a hard-to-get thing. Come on baby, you know you want it, you want to do some long hard coding for me, I can tell your job quote says no but your body says yes yes YES!

Love, Amelia G

your best bet is to go to elance.com and outsource your project to some programmers in india , russia, or romania, to name a few. They have really good programmers and they are the cheapest ones you will find.

Just post your project on elance, and go with the bid thats the cheapest price yet from someone with the most / best feedback rating. How can you go wrong with that?

WhoreHEY 02-24-2003 07:34 PM

NO NO! I amd the betstest programmer anywhere.

http://www.netfinity.net <-- my company

I have done billing systems, eCommerce managers, Video on Demand server, Affiliate and Banner programs, SeeJack.com url redirection (with backend for users and site owner), content management programs, thumbnail gallery scripts (resizes dynamically web-based), getunicorn.com e-newletter publishing system and even more shit.

What do you need to have done??

I'm really looking more for a good job than a cheap job. I know what the going rates are for most stuff I hire people to do, so I can tell if someone talented is giving me a cool deal. But I don't know what is high or low for PHP, so I don't know how to budget it out. Anyone want to educate me on that pricing range?

Thanks, Amelia G

fnet 02-24-2003 07:41 PM

Amelia, I have a friend who's done a fair amount of mainstream open source work with PHP/MySQL, who is always looking for side projects. Don't know what he considers a good rate, but he is a smart, reasonable guy who gets it.

I've been asked to ask you about your thesis. If you happen to see this... somehow I neglected to add you to my icq list (mine is 13384735).

fletcher 02-24-2003 07:42 PM

Hey Amelia. I've done stuff for everyone from local mom and pops to Fortune 50s, as well as a bunch of adult related programming. I'd be more than happy to talk to you, give you some references, and show you some samples. Let me know. Hit me up at 225006418 on ICQ, or email me at fletch @ pennygirls.com

That depends on how much work it is. If you need a simple redirection script that works off a flat text file than any competant programmer can do that for like $150. If you need something that requires database programming and a functional management system than you will be paying more for custom work. For example, we quote out projects not on an hourly basis but on a single price for the whole project.

There are a few things to take into consideration: time, overall design of the project, communication with the client, design comps (if necessary), fundtional outline of any managers, initial launch, testing and final tweeks, etc..

Those steps apply to projects that are of meduim to large size and require more than 1 person working on it. We've done projects from $1500 all the way up to $50K. It all depends on the scope of the project. Whoever you hire you must see past projects that were paid for (not for my buddy or cousin) and have gone through the full cycle of development.

This is the same no matter if it's work in the adult world or not.

You often get what you pay for!
:2 cents:

If you are still looking for a PHP programmer that can get the job done, then please feel free to contact me at ICQ 132514337. For a list of what I can do and my previous experience, check the following thread.

http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...hreadid=110235

Hope to hear from you soon. I would be more than willing to discuss your project in full with you and if I am unable to provide assistance, then I would be happy to find someone who can.

:)

Ok, I contacted David and according to him a fair rate for a good programmer doing contract work is 35/hour.

David is a skilled, determined individual with a strong consulting record in php/mysql. One of his php/mysql open source projects is a prominent IT world download on sourceforge.

Amelia, I've heard rates from $10 to $200+/hour. But fnet's estimate of $35/hour would be fairly typical of a moderately experienced US-based programmer.

However an hourly rate is not necessarily a reliable indicator of whether a programmer is good value because some are much more productive than others.

With a definable project you're usually better-off going with a project-rate in preference to an hourly rate. That way you'll know exactly what the job is going to cost.

As for a budget you could probably get a very *rough* estimate by describing your project briefly in this thread. But if you want a more exact number you'll need to clearly and precisely define what functionality and features you require, then arrange for several well-qualified programmers to bid.

Elance.com is in fact a good place to find affordable and reliable programmers because there is plenty of competition for each job and you can read feedback posted by previous clients.

As for assessing the suitability of anyone recommended on this board I would suggest seeking people with strong and credible references and a substantial portfolio of work.

I have a guy who is the best programmer I've ever worked with (and I've worked with many), but I don't think he's interested in any additional adult-related clients. If it's a mainstream project let me know and I'll give you his details.

Hi,

I've just started taking contract PHP + MySQL work. You can check out a list of my previous projects and current skills over at htt://www.fakeplasticrobot.com

With the Aussie dollar being the way it is, my hourly rate is also very competitive.

My ICQ and email is on the website.

Thanks :)

Scott.
