What I know about Chechnya

what I know about chechnyah is that it is majority muslim, and that the Russians have been occupying and killing them for many years. They are the largest source of Russian terror attacks, including many famous attacks like the theatre hostagetaking that ended in disaster.

I did not have much reason to think that chechens held the US responsible for their occupation. But muslims believe that the US has been oppressing them for many years by supporting the strongman regimes that delivered us oil.

I guess we'll be learning a lot more about chechnyah soon.

You should, Chechnya has been in the news quite a lot over the last few years or so.
They gave Russia loads of problems, a lot of those horrendous beheading videos come from Chechnya.
It was Chechnyans who did that school siege and the theatre siege too.
Apparently its a pretty lawless place run pretty much by gangs.

well, again from cnn, they were supposedly running from the occupation in chechnyah, ran to kazakhstan, then came to the US to go to school - which implies they may have had family money. But, they were part of the new migrant class, running from the wars and occupations.

They weren't born in Chechnya. Their family moved away from there before they were born. Brothers were born in Tyrgistan and Kyrgyzstan. They have family members in Massachusetts. Parents are still in Russia.

A lot of what they did does not make a lot of sense. Walking thru a heavily photographed and videoed crowd with no disguises to plant bombs? Running around with guns and bombs and committing minor crimes and a headshot murder? It seems incredibly naïve.

I don't remember Russia having a problem with the Chechens. They speak Russian and watch Russian TV stations. I believe the problems started when Chechnya closed gas or oil pipe lines running from this Russian province to the rest of Russia and declared independancy. That's like Alaska drawing away from the USA, it's not gonna happen.

That was a few years after they shut down the Russian oil pipeline running through them ('98 or so?). I'm 30 and I left Russia in '89 so I guess I wasn't really paying attention to what happened in the mid '90s. Now that you all mention it I just looked it up, the invasion started in 1994 and Russia pulled back in '96.

It was 2002, they made a movie about it that wasn't all that long ago.

My journalism professor when I went to college in Boston, of all places, was an expert on the Chechnya war and made sure we followed it. That was back in 1995 when it was the big story globally. I bet he will be quoted all over the place this week.
