Pretty funny stats from Reddit

I've been testing different types of posts over on Reddit, to see if I could come up with a pattern of success so to speak and then replicate it.

This is stats so far, from a post I did yesterday. I'm not sure if it will or if it did hit the front page. But kinda interesting numbers.

I think I found the trick, and that's to make people argue..

1,884 points (52% like it)
24,236 up votes 22,352 down votes

2,775 comments (people love to argue)

:1orglaugh

I'm sure it would have been much better had Reddit not been acting like ass this morning. It's been spitting out almost constant 404's the last few hours.

I hate reddit... I've gotten a couple OC gifs and images to the front page with luck. But it seems like if even a couple people downvote you at the beginning your post is doomed even if it's front page worthy.

I hate how an original poster can get only a few upvotes and then someone steals it and reposts and gets to the front page.

Says they are having a DDos attack so could be the 404 issue.

Wait a minute.... A person or people choose who gets front page? I thought that was random AFTER it got votes?

It isn't random --- the ranking is a combo of

- newness of the post
- number of upvotes
- number of upvotes vs. downvotes
- number of comments
- size of the subreddit it is from (if you get 1000 votes on a tiny subreddit, you'll hit front page, but 1000 votes on /r/pics will not)

Last night one of the Boston threads from /r/news hit #1 on /r/all in literally 7 minutes. Fastest #1 I've ever seen.

One of the best tips you can get for hitting front page (besides using a controversial or vague title) is time you post ---

Posting between 5am and 8am PST is the best time IMO but someone might have run a real report to get actual results. East coast is awake, getting to work, and hungry for new content. West coast is just waking up and browsing over coffee.

Yeah, drama threads are usually the most active forum threads... could just read GFY to see that. Forum owners tend to plant little drama seeds and watch them grow out of control all on their own. :)

I actually posted leading into prime time. :winkwink:

Was about 3:30 PM eastern time.. Post didn't gain any more traction than what I posted above unfortunately. I think the DDOS attack or what ever was happening this morning did it in and kept it from going any further.

I'm certain it would of made front page (if it didn't while I was away), as I had more comments than any of the posts on the front page right now and just as many upvotes and many of the current top 10.

this is cool :)

I like Reddit. Often comments are much better than pic/post/text itself.

So when you reach front page? What happens... virtual high fives?

That has always been true. It's good way to jump start a forum too.

It's traffic man, just have to be creative how you pull people from the post you make to where you want them to go. Same with any social network site.
