web developers - whats better for clasified site, custom CMS or wordpress?

Each has pros and cons, can not decide which route to go. Any input would be great :)

i would suggest custom :2 cents:

d-null 04-11-2013 04:22 PM

classified ads site.

custom and make sure it's done with an mvc framework of whatever programming language you feel comfortable with. this way you'll get some project organization and it will be easier to bring on others to help build it out if the last guy "disappears". :2 cents:

So what are advantages of going custom?

You mentioned one disadvantage - with wordpress its easier to find developers to add some stuff and so on. And not that pricey over finding someone who would like to play with someone's else custom code.

Sound like Ruby on Rails is the best way to go, you should also look into Laravel and Code Igniter.

One of the concerns for me as non programmer - when I get wordpress site I know what it is and +- know the quality of wordpress CMS and know that itsdecent, security is decent as well if I install couple plugins.
When getting custom CMS I do not have the experience to tell if delivered CMS is decent in terms of everything. Maybe its poorly written and has security holes and I do not know that.

unless you're a programmer yourself or planning to spend a lot of money, I'd say WordPress without a shadow of a doubt :2 cents:

Custom is always best unless cost is your biggest concern. A good programmer will build you an admin that you can expand on. .. make sure documention is included

Documentation

As you have alluded to with a custom its hard to know if its good or bad, it may look good but that's just half of it - With an off the shelf WP solution you have feedback from other users.

Unless you have a solid coder with a background you can verify I would go with WP - Its bloated as hell but with a few tweaks you can get it up to working speeds...

CyberHustler 04-11-2013 06:15 PM

Try AdultSiteCMS, it's wordpress based.

What kind of tweaks would those be?
Thanks

Using a cache is the biggest thing you can do - Even better use Nginx as a reverse proxy/cache server with something like Apache to do the grunt work - The best WP cache plugins support this config as standard.

Take a look at this - It looks scary at first but the speed is amazing....

http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/...d_server_setup

Also with WP you can make use of things like auto full backups to a cloud server with a free plug in - It will cost you extra to add a feature like that to a custom script....

wordpress has a lot of bloat because its made to do a lot of things. you would need to do things like turn on caching, optimize database queries, secure the admin and system overall.

wordpress has its disadvantages but is much cheaper then custom made. custom allows you to not be tied to the WP "framework" and opens a lot of creativity(almost endless), but this comes at a cost of money, time and trust that the person you are paying knows whats going on.

documentation is important, but a good programmer should document their code at least a little bit. good code should be fairly easy to read and navigate and have some kind of structure. some programmers(good or bad) will write code that is very hard for anyone else to maintain, sometimes to lock you into their services, other times from lack of knowledge.

tough decision, really it comes down to money... if you got the coin, go with custom, always.

wordpress is the way to go

candyflip 04-12-2013 04:44 AM

I'd have to say something built on Drupal. I see what my girl is able to do with that CMS and I'm often blown away at how flexible it is.

Mark.Roy 04-12-2013 05:33 AM

get a custom made.

scouser 04-12-2013 08:32 AM

custom. but with enough code you can butcher wordpress from a blog cms to just about any other kind of cms. eg http://www.awpcp.com/
