Movies really piss me off, how about you?

Fuck Hollywood, fuck movie editing companies, fuck subtitles and fuck VHS manufacturers. Fuck em all. I can't believe that in this day and age of such awesome technology that this kind of shit has to happen.

TV movies --- the sound is completely fucked. In scenes where there is low/normal talking you can barely hear what they're saying. So you turn it way up to hear it, and a few minutes later there's a scene with loud special effects and BoOmMMmmmm..... your neighbors are complaining, or other apartment dwellers around are thumping the fucking walls. Heaven forbid you can watch a movie with kids sleeping in the house.

Subtitled movies --- Why why WHY do they always have to put the subtext in white and ONLY white?? Why? First scenes you come to with a lighter background, and what happens.... that's right,... no one can fucking read shit. Nice work, subtitle people. Jerks.

VHS rentals --- what's with the 20 fucking minutes at the beginning of every movie that bombards us with these stupid previews that show like half of each movie?? On and on and fucking ON they go.... some even have more shit AFTER the actual movie is over. I won't be surprised when the day comes when they start shoving commercials and previews right in the middle of a rental movie.

Why does there have to be incompetence in EVERY single facet of life?

/rant.

Thank you.

Get a DVD player.

DarkJedi 02-23-2003 08:04 AM

i noticed it with DVD too - they got these super high quality special effects that are too loud and its hard to hear the conversation.

delia 02-23-2003 08:06 AM

Start watching european movies. You won't see a single effect in an europeam movie, and everything is so natural and realistic. :)

.:Frog:. 02-23-2003 08:08 AM

I love movies.

CDSmith 02-23-2003 09:25 AM

Just needed a good window-rattling rant. It's...been a while.

Anyway, yeah, you get a quiet scene where two people are talking normally and you have to turn the damn volume wayy up to hear anything coherent, and then blammo..... a phone rings or the next scene involves anything loud and you just about jump out of your skin.

And a lot of euro movies have those fucking subtitles that are about 30-40% impossible to read.

strobi 02-23-2003 09:37 AM

Drop the stupid Hollywood Crap.... problem solved.... Spanish movies all the way!

fight the power... here's how!

1. get a dvd-burner

2. go to alt.binaries.dvdr

3. download + burn, but hey, this way you don't put any money in their pockets... the best form of protest..!

The better foreign films use subtitles which are outlined in a contrasting color, so that if the subtitle is white and appears against a white background, you can still read it due to the black outline. I don't understand why all subtitles are not done this way.

If you're not hearing the dialogue, and you've got a surround system, chances are your center channel speaker needs adjusting.
On out of the box systems, emphesis is put into big bass and such, and not fine tuning of the whole deal.
Adding a high end center channel speaker can make a huge difference, since this is the channel most dialogue is coming from.

THAT.......is actually not a bad idea. I'm going to be looking into that when I buy my new tv. I'm thinking of jumping to the newer wide-screen format.

Stocktrader --- I HAVE a dvd player, the sound is the same.

Unseen --- re- subtitles........ I sometimes watch those late-night euro-movies on the "Showcase" channel, and from what I can tell of it, MOST of them are subtitled with rather smallish white-letters that have no background shading. In any scene where part of the bottom of the screen is light, the letters in front of it disappear. It's like having rolling sound blackouts in a regular movie.Grrr, and that includes French, German, Spanish, Czech, all of them. I don't know what brain-dead idiots are doing subtitle work for these flicks, but they could use the assistance of a good webmaster that knows basic photoshop to demonstrate how it should look.

LadyM -- Well, a little I guess. If there was a "movie producer's board" where I could shove this rant in their faces, that would be good too. <img SRC="http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif">

Welcome to the age of media convergence, get use to it because it's likely to be around for a very long time.
Why it's so bad in mainstream now has to do with what happened in 2000. The final phase where Viacom, Liberty and a slew of other corps completed merging their buyouts.

It was a time when Hollywood lost a lot of its finest creatives. It's not about creating great entertainment any more it's about making and remaking cheap ass garbage like reality and talk shows etc... I know of at least a dozen artists that went back home to Mexico, Germany, England, Japan, Ireland, China and few I can't remember.

There's still some of the best creatives in the world in Hollywood but there's very little entertainment where they can rocknroll and move an audience. They would of left also but they had families to feed.

I get a call every week from one those that stayed trying to sweet talk me into coming back. It's always a good laugh. Here's what it's like now, one friend tells me that a project that paid a $150,000 in 2000 is only worth at best $40,000 today.

Another friend tells me that Paramount has owed him $90,000 for six fucking months... I use to get a check within two weeks after sending a bill to Paramount, they were the best.

Another friend says he's losing his mind because the major networks owe him over 2 million dollars, his payroll is about $100,000 a week, he's running the company off lines of credit that is costing him $20,000-$30,000 a month in interest.

Go have a look at the companys that viacom owns and click on those companies and see who they own etc..

The only chance for recovery is if a company like newline can continue to hit big for long enough to be able to take back some of what VIACOM has destroyed.

CDSmith 02-23-2003 04:36 PM

I'm not sure what all that has to do with sound and subtitles, but maybe it has something to do with all the shit they put onto rental movies, 20 minutes of BS previews etc. I don't know.

But as far as reality shows go, if no one watched them they'd go away pretty fast. But millions are watching them, so there must be something to them, no? Give the people what they want, and it seems right now they want reality shows. I guess some haters will just have to suck it down and live with it.

Nasty D 02-23-2003 04:42 PM

I'm with you shit is too much these days.....I like watching the old comedies from late seventies and early eighties like...Stripes, Caddie Shack, Fletch......comedies back then had more believable characters doing outrageous things....but always remained believable. Fuck Hollywood, we need more Kevin Smith's!

Well at least the sound levels on those movies were more evened out so you can watch them without giving someone a heart attack.
