Which version of Linux you guys use? Trying to get a graphics card to work on my Ubuntu 12.04 is driving me nuts.

anexsia 03-30-2013 05:40 PM

Barry-xlovecam 03-30-2013 08:36 PM

Do you have the default GUI (desktop) working?
Tried ;
Main Menu => System => Administration => Hardware Drivers

Check the video card manufacturer's website for its LINUX drivers?

I have Debian and Ubuntu workstations working fine with ATI chip vid cards.

JamesM 03-30-2013 11:51 PM

cent os on one of my desktop and on server.

just a punk 03-31-2013 02:58 AM

On servers? CentOS of course.

rowan 03-31-2013 03:18 AM

FreeBSD.

*ducks*

Klen 03-31-2013 03:50 AM

Server - Cent Os
Desktop - Linux Mint
For some reason slackware won as most popular desktop choice on linuxquestions, which i find totaly weird considering it's spartan version of linux like freebsd.Anyway,i suggest you to try linux mint as linux mint is based on ubuntu and it's not so buggy as ubuntu.

AndrewX 03-31-2013 07:23 AM

If Ubuntu fails Linux Mint would be a good and easy to use alternative. It has a more standard (I believe KDE) desktop, Ubuntu has a custom one. CentOS for secure servers, Debian for smaller servers built for speed.

Good luck!

I will give that a try. I have an Nvidia card. I get Xblink. Blinking windows in XWindows. Tried and APT GET UPDATE.

I also tried APT-GET INSTALL NVIDIA-CURRENT. This worked on my version I had on a thumb drive. But for some reason on my new install on my drive, I get an error when trying to get NVIDIA-CURRENT.

I may keep at it a while. Thanks for the input.

LUBUNTU solved some issues with a graphics card on a laptop I have - Not sure how or why - It just seems to work when UBUNTU will not...

No guarantees I am afraid - If you just want to play with Linux you are better off using a virtual machine - That will defiantly work - http://www.traffictool.net/vmware/ is a good place to start...

Zyzz 03-31-2013 11:42 AM

Desktop Linux Mint works great, server CentOS or Debian and FreeBSD.

vending_machine 03-31-2013 03:19 PM

Boot into your BIOS and check the graphics settings. Change it from Optimus to Discrete.

Code:

$ apt-cache search nvidia-current
nvidia-current-modaliases - Modaliases for the NVIDIA binary X.Org driver
nvidia-current - NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library
nvidia-current-dev - NVIDIA binary Xorg driver development files

then $ sudo apt-get install [all lower case]

Good choice for desktop. Bleeding edge. The others in trying to make it simple make it complex when something goes wrong.

CYF 03-31-2013 09:18 PM

Freebsd of course :) PCBSD for the netbook, freebsd for everything else including servers.

rock-reed 03-31-2013 09:28 PM

Fedora and Ubuntu.

KDE or Gnome as desktop?
Gnome (2x) needs less resources

candyflip 04-10-2013 10:32 AM

Just installed the newest version of StudioUbuntu on my new desktop. I don't use it for much, just wanted a box that could run anything.

And xfce even less.

Ferus 04-10-2013 11:17 AM

Fedora (due to its tie to Redhat) have very good support for GPU. That is one of the reasons I use it on some of my systems, where GPU acceleration is important.

But the Xubuntu is my favorit.
Its SO light, easy to use and quick. The interface is much better than Ununuts terrible Gnome3 GUI

Women make up 51 percent of the population, and because of this, Linux should be banned in government. Operating Systems like Linux discriminate against women because of a built in difficulty compared with Windows and Apple's OS X. Women pay taxes, and therefore shouldn't be discriminated against in getting employment with government agencies. If these agencies had used Windows or OS X, more women would be able to persue dreams of a full time job in government. Linux is by its nature a man's domain. Women are designed to use social interaction and emotions to deal with complex tasks, things the command line are ill suited. OS X, and Windows have friendly and female-intuitive designs that take into account a woman's understanding of objects, ie. folders, desktops, Clippy, the XP search dog. These help women operate the computer by giving her a relationship with these icons, and helpful animated pets. It makes a woman feel at home with her computer by allowing her to relate to it. Linux, on the other hand is designed for command line and programming. Sure, it may have a fugly GUI to hide its true being, but to get any serious work done you must know a bunch of arcane commands with hundreds of options that change with every command. Something like this: chmod a+rwx. Only engineers can understand this. And most engineers are still men. This puts the female population at a great disadvantage when applying for work. Men know this, and that's why they deliberately try to install linux in the workplace. How would women's groups react when they read the studies that are being commissioned by industry on this very subject? Surely, women, when they learn of this, will outvote men and ban linux from the government.
