Have you ever had your email hacked?

While we all know what spam is, has it ever occurred to you that the spam you're receiving isn't actually sent by the company that's mentioned?

I just read about SpeedBoink.com on AVN, encountering this on a massive level and how they intend on catching the perpetrators responsible for sending out thousands of emails with generic type in links to SpeedBoink.com among other things.

So this got me wondering, have you ever had your email hacked? I personally haven't but I've had several people in the past send me crazy emails and I've hit them up saying "wtf is up with that?" only to learn that the email wasn't sent out by them and that their email account had been hacked.

There are other instances where it's not so much the email itself that's been hacked but where the contents of the email is spamming you much like what's happening to SpeedBoink.com, to whom of which I give props for publicly acknowledging and apologizing to those effected by the DDoS spam attacks they are fighting.

It sucks to know that this could happen to any one of us but we can show support and assist those who take action in effort to put a stop to it and prevent it from happening to others hence why I wanted to point out this topic of discussion.

So tell me......
Have you had your email hacked before?

I'm just curious to hear what others have experienced and what better place to do so than on GFY. :thumbsup

Didn't read whats happening with speedboink but e-mail spoofing has been going on since the dawn of the internet. Basically the Senders e-mail address is forged to look like someone elses. You could send an email that looks like its from [email protected] and when the receiver replies to the email it will go to [email protected]. Of course there is no record of the email being sent on the whitehouse.gov servers because it didnt originate from there.

Appears speedboink is just another recipient of the classic JOEJOB. And if your email was hacked it was either because your computer has a trojan or you used a easily guessed password for your email account.

Yeah it could never be actual hacking and involve buffer underflows :2 cents:

I've been hacked. I'm anal, use special passwords for everything, numbers for letters, and always anti virus.

I've seen friends get hacked, but always non industry peeps. Most of us here are technologically savvy and now how to never get such emails.

And I know you are a smart & cautious cookie Rochard! :winkwink:

Basically it don't matter who you are or what precautions you take, this could happen to you!
The same could be said about pregnancy, STD's and love, we are all at risk. lol :1orglaugh

aah no shit asshat. If someone is going to hack email its because they are going after larger amounts of email accounts from a free service like yahoo or hotmail. Just how far you think someone will get by hacking someones pop server? Will be blacklisted before anything worthwhile gets out rendering it useless.

Klen 03-28-2013 04:01 PM

Nop dont think i ever had hacked mail, but once one of my friend mail was hacked by common enemy and they saw how we plot against them :D
And it is total irony how they gained password, they asked him for birthday date and then used lost password form with it :)

And your point is? Most people dont use a pop. They use free email services like stated before. And most of them filter their mail using blacklist like spamhaus. They will get inbox for a short time and then will junk. Only inbox they are getting in general email (pops)
Big deal!

Well,in years as security expert,i concluded following:there is absolutely no need for crazy passwords, and if someone breaks into your account, they did it because-
1.they keylogged your password
2.they exploited security hole of program/script/operative system which you use(most common case is with security holes of scripts)
So due to second case even if you have top notch security it will still be penetrated due third party holes.
Also what i noticed in 99% of cases they never target someone individualy ,its basicly like fishing and searching for "fish"
And when it comes to picking password,no need for having in form like dF44343"$# (small/big characters, number, special chars),it's better is to have it in combination of words like "iliketurtlesandtheylikeme1234" since even if you have super computer at disposal to crack password it will be hard to penetrate combinationofsimplewords then combination of characters/numbers as there is bigger number of combinations which need to be tried and combination of words is much easier to remember.
