NASA's advice if asteroid heads for New York City: 'Pray'

Michio Kaku commentary:

I don't get it... The US gov refuses to spend a couple hundred million on a better telescope to track near-Earth objects, yet has no problem funding the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, which cost way more than the total funding of NASA since it's inception in 1958. People really should stop playing with guns and use the money for more important stuff :2 cents:

GFY seems to care about this as much as Thai hookers do...

quick, someone come up with Asteroid Insurance and you will make millions! :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Why is it always the US that "has" to spend the money? Ok yea we are the guys with the biggest stick, so yes it's ok that we carry the burden of having to pay the keep the stick sharpened.

However there are lots of other countries in this planet that could very well take up being top dogs on being protectors of Earth from evil asteroids and flip the bill for finding and tracking them.

Everything shouldn't always be left at the feet of the US to do the heavy lifting. Then have everyone bitch because they don't like the way we did it.

I live on the NJ side of the Hudson River, right across from lower manhattan and the WTC site. If a meteor is headed for the city, I am headed straight for the Statue of Liberty. Why?

In every end-of-the-world movie I have ever seen, the Statue manages to survive.

Not much you are going to be able to do if it hits locally. For everyone else, we need to be prepared.

Years ago we had an earthquake, and it suddenly hits you like a rock about how unprepared you are. Simple things like flash lights and batteries for a radio, cooking... No stores, you can't leave town...

what makes NASA think god cares ?

Keeping track of what? Seems they aren't. Russia got hit and they didn't see that coming.

Mr Pheer 03-26-2013 01:12 PM

Why cant some other country build a telescope?

If a meteor is headed to any city, that city should prey.

thing is, with the amount of space junk floating around

asteroids are the least of our problems

lol I remember my Atomic, Biological and Chemical warfare instructor told us that when it came to nukes - if we were close enough to watch the schroom, we might as well stand up and enjoy the view.

I guess the same goes for meteors.
