internet troll sentenced to 41 months jail for accessing non-password protected area of AT&T site

seems really extremely excessive for what he did, in usa how many months do people get in jail for violent assault?

Normally Auernheimer's predicament might not have attracted much attention. But he was convicted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, a controversial law that was enacted to deter intrusions into NORAD, but was expanded over time to criminalize terms of use violations -- including, according to federal prosecutors, lying about your personal information when using social networks.
so the way the laws are written in USA, you could go to jail for signing up for facebook with a fake name?

Maybe he received 3 months for the crime and 38 months to be served consecutively for being a douche.

His organization, Goatse Security, created a script to download the records and gave the results to Gawker.

I can not understand how this is a bad thing. If they start putting people in jail for the stupid they do on the Internet. Then the Internet would be a much better tool.
officially retired as of March 01 2018 but still fucking around and getting into shit.
