I don't watch this program, but as I understand how it works, this guy could either walk away with $416,000 OR he had a 50/50 chance at a million or nothing

If that's real, I'm extremely confused. Why would he make a gamble like that? Technically, I guess some would say that if the offer was under $500k, it favors him to do it. Still, if you only get to do it ONE TIME ... why would anyone not bank the $400k?

Well, since the irs would fuck me out of a piece of it, I probably would have to get a much smaller house than I had planned. But it'd be a house.

Had he taken the deal the worst that could have happened is that he finds out his case has the million in it and he could have had more, but greed got the better part of him and he believed his "gut feelings" as if a person could have a sense of what random number was in a case.
