Pill to live to 150

Drugs that could help people to live to 150 by slowing the ageing process are being developed by scientists.

The drugs are synthetic versions of resveratrol, found in red wine, an organic chemical believed to have an anti-ageing effect, by boosting activity of a protein called SIRT1.

GSK, the pharmaceutical firm, is testing them on people with particular medical conditions, namely Type II diabetes and psoriasis, a serious skin condition.

David Sinclair, professor of genetics at Harvard University, said ageing might not actually be an "irreversible affliction".

He said: ?Now we are looking at whether there are benefits for those who are already healthy.

"Things there are also looking promising. We're finding that ageing isn't the irreversible affliction that we thought it was.

The point is not to extend your agony, it's to extend healthy life. This type of thing actually reverses aging.

Have you ever heard of stem cell replacement therapy? They can replace damaged heart cells with healthy heart cells, and basically give you a heart transplant... with your own heart. You won't be living an extra 100 years of shitty life... you'll be super fit, and living an extra 100 years.

I saw 2 important words "red wine" … I drink 2-3 bottles a week, better adjust my retirement plans.

I guess we shall see.

Gene therapy will be the only thing to stop aging completely. Until you see the vast majority of genetic diseases cured don't expect biological immortality. It's a long way off but we have cured a few diseases by replacing DNA.

If you can afford to live that long.

I'd think that if you were healthy and full of energy you could afford it. Hell, the one thing I dread other than death itself is not being able to work. :)

I have so many things I want to do and not enough time to do them. Give me another 70 years of feeling young and healthy and I'd have more time for my money making schemes to come to fruition. lol

You could watch the Sixth Sense every day and be surprised by the ending each time.

do you really think you would live that long if you had that? no chance...

TheSquealer 03-11-2013 06:39 AM

Fighting disease, improving immune function and so on have
absolutely nothing to do with the core problem of DNA strands breaking down.

J. Falcon 03-11-2013 06:42 AM

Who the fuck wants to live that long?

Dunno man. They can already stretch it out to well over a decade now and quantum leaps in treatment and medication are pretty frequent. I mean - you have Alzheimer's next year, get on all the current drugs right away to slow its progression and in the next 5 years, there is likely to be a new class of drugs that will slow it slow it and so on. So it's not unreasonable to hope to be in a vegetative state for decades if that's the plan :)

Don't worry, it won't be affordable for most people. And as 150 year old life pills are passed around to those who can afford it, the lesser people will be killed off with various cancers to balance it all out.

_Richard_ 03-11-2013 08:13 AM

paid for with tax dollars, utilized only by the rich

Buddy of mine in Atlanta is about to open a stem cell storage facility for people that want to store their healthy stem cells against future problems.

Vendzilla 03-11-2013 08:36 AM

well I'm a rum drinker and as I may not live to 150, I'll live to 90 singing!!!

Mutt 03-11-2013 08:51 AM

human DNA breaks down at about 120 years - you can cure every disease we die from but at this time but it will still be game over by 120.

BUT biotechnology and more importantly nanotechnology are making big progress from what I've read and in the next 25 years or so they'll be able to modify/repair DNA at the sub microscopic level.

what about just downloading the contents of our brains and transferring them into a new cloned body?

femdomdestiny 03-11-2013 09:00 AM

sounds good but I guess storage space will be expensive?

LAJ 03-11-2013 10:48 AM

The world can't handle people living to 150 years. Food, resources and living space will disappear in short order.
