Anyone have a standing work desk?

How high is your desk? Did it take a while to get used to?

Verbal 03-01-2013 01:31 PM

Be interested in hearing about this as well as I've been seriously considering it. My back has been killing me.

shake 03-01-2013 01:41 PM

No but I want to get one of these motorized desks I thought about getting just a standing desk, but it's nice to be able to sit in the morning drink coffee and get your day started...

beerptrol 03-01-2013 01:45 PM

my girlfriend has two of them, a stove and a kitchen sink

kane 03-01-2013 01:51 PM

I have thought about getting one and seeing if I could at least spend part of my day working at it. Might be kind of a cool way to get some exercise while looking at porn.

MiLo 03-01-2013 01:54 PM

My lower back would love one...

I think what you need is a treadmill desk. Standing isnt exactly exercise.

i built mine by adding a small piece of furniture on top of my old desk for the monitor and adding wooden tablets to get the keyboard and mouse to the right level so its comfortable but after a while i got fed up of standing too long so i still alternate between a sitting station and that standing station

lucas131 03-01-2013 01:58 PM

that is some really nice idea, thanks for it! :winkwink:

faxxaff 03-01-2013 01:59 PM

I would love to have two or three, but at the time I looked at this option standing desks were extremely expensive . Maybe it's cheaper to put ladyboys on payroll?

Barefootsies 03-01-2013 02:01 PM

When I worked in telco, they had those in the business office. They were nice.

I was 50% standing and 50% sitting most days. A little variety. Plus you could look at the lovelies walking around.

hyper extensions :2 cents:

Allison 03-01-2013 03:26 PM

We have a few employees that work standing about 60% to 70% of the day (they requested standing desks) and they loved it. We also have a lot of exercise ball sitters too. :)

True, but it is a lot more exercising that sitting :winkwink:

Na, been reading how bad it is for you. Had no idea. Freaked me out a bit to be honest. If what they say is only 1/2 true it is terrifying.

Is that a good podcast?

RyuLion 03-01-2013 04:20 PM

I'll pass on that one. I don't want sympathy for looking handicapped.
I don't want to mount "the bull" every morning either.

never thought about it, but it's an interesting idea.

Matt 26z 03-02-2013 05:14 AM

My lower back isn't in the best condition anymore, so I alternate between desks and chairs. One of them is a antique standing desk that I picked up at a church yard sale. Then I bought a drafting table chair so I could also sit at it. The drafting chairs are like regular computer chairs only they raise up really high and have a foot rest.

Antonio 03-02-2013 05:25 AM

man, this is a great idea; sitting is killing us, quite literally, working sitting all day long shortens your life span, not to mention it greatly increases the likelihood of some seriously nasty health conditions

Black All Through 03-02-2013 05:39 AM

I did for three years from 1999 to 2002

What happened?

beemk 03-02-2013 03:53 PM

It totally depends on your height. I would aim your arm down and bend your elbows up so your arm makes a 90 degree angle and that's a good height to use the keyboard without lifting your arm up. Standing doesn't burn a ton of calories but its better on your body and helps you so you can stand longer. After you do it for a few weeks it's really easy. Make sure you have a cushion for your feet otherwise your back will hurt. I used a piece of 4" seat foam but you can but mats at the store.

I used a stand up desk for about a year then switched to a treadmill desk. Instead of buying one for $3,000 or whatever I took one of These and took the top off and cut the metal so it was flat and put a granite counter top on it. I walk 6-8 miles a day if I'm working a lot from home at 2MPH.

Same here. Never thought and not sure if even heard about that before.

Heath 03-02-2013 04:04 PM

No but I did just read an article about how sitting all day at work is causing a lot of people more problems than fatty foods. Mainly blood clots and heart issues. So it is definitely a good idea if you have room for both, or a desk that can do both.

DeanCapture 03-02-2013 04:09 PM

I used to have one but don't anymore.

I decided to get one after reading about a film editor (Walter Murch) that used one when editing his films. Just thought it would be cool to get off my ass when editing vids & pics. It lasted about 2 weeks and decided to drop it's height and use it as a regular desk. Didn't enjoy it at all :Oh crap

I have one I special ordered from Poland.

.

bronco67 03-02-2013 04:15 PM

I've had one for 6 years, and would never go back.

The option to stand or sit is twice as good as the option to just sit. That's basic math for you.

Did you get an adjustable one, or do you have two different desks?
