Not everyone has a sandbox setup... on live sites (that actually have traffic...) i like to do a:
if($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] == 'myipgoeshere') { ... }

hehe, yeah for sure, but we're talking gfy here with all the money this site drives they really should have a dev box. In any case, vB licenses allow for a dev setup, which of course can be on the same server and share the same db if it's just for template use.
Zero excuse for hot coding imo
