Being a non native speaker I manage to understand American English very well but
midlands UK man, thats ugly. How come it took me 3 days to barely catch up a conversation in Nottingham? What did you do to the language out there folks :)?

Its because you are used to American English via movies and so on.

Had a chance to visit Derby, just missed my bus and went down to Derby, actually the driver was nice and allowed me to hop in for free to go back to Long Eaton I was staying at...

I mean they speak FAST and CUT the words using local idioms a LOT!!!

I stayed for 6 months in the UK when I was in my 20s, there was this one guy that no one could understood. not even the Brits, and he wasn't Irish and he didn't have any speech impediments.

Takes some time to get used to the accent, no doubt. It's a great feeling when you get it, it actually sounds nicer IMHO.

Don't feel bad, Americans can't understand them either.

Come back to me when you have been to Newcastle or Glasgow - The Midland's accent is tame in comparison.
