Federal Debt Near Ceiling; Second Time in 9 Months

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 ? With budget deficits climbing rapidly, the Bush administration acknowledged today that the government had reached its legal limit on borrowing and would run short of cash by early April unless Congress once again raised the debt ceiling.

Because Congress inevitably does raise the ceiling after intense jousting, the announcement will have little, if any, effect on operations. But it highlights the new era of red ink that the government faces even before President Bush's latest proposals for more than $1 trillion in tax cuts over 10 years.

Two years ago, administration forecasters predicted large budget surpluses. But the economic slowdown and the faltering stock market sent tax revenues plunging, even as government spending continued to increase.

The White House now projects a deficit of more than $300 billion this year and next, as well as deficits for at least the next decade.

who cares about a deficit? i dont care what this country owes... because it has little to no impact on you or me... tax cuts are good because they give us back our money... democrats want socialism... they think the government knows how to spend our money better than we do... personally i fail to see how we owe all this money because some of the countries we owe it to are countries that we rebuilt after ww2 and as far as i know we never got paid back for that... in any case the reason we have a deficit is because washington wastes money like no other... they need to learn how to be more efficient instead of taking more from the taxpayers

Tax CUTS?! :1orglaugh What little trickle down it has to the majority of Americans will end up in your gas tanks and right bavk in Repubs pockets. Democrats may spend money on the poor, but would you rather your tax get spent on homeless or:

new brick streets in some congressmans city (replacing concrete or blacktop roads in good condition...) Have to make that 'historic area' LOOK historic don'cha kno'.

Handing billions to some country that next year will either hate us or want triple what they got this year...

And the list goes on... pork barrel garbage and big corp profits on the backs of the majority of Americans...

A lot of you are too young to remember much about other Republican Presidents but they don't give that tax cut to the regular Americans.

It's not a case of spending money on poor people OR spending it on that other stuff.

You know that all that pork barrel money will be spent anyways, by democrats and republicans alike.

So why should we spend extra tax money supporting people their whole lives and encouraging them have to even more babies?

This isn't a zero-sum game, you know... raising spending while cutting taxes is fine so long as the tax cuts stimulate the economy enough to make up for the initial loss in revenue. That's the theory, anyway, and I happen to believe it works. Case and point - virtually every dollar I don't pay in taxes is spent on goods and services, or else reinvested into my business. I can sure as hell make better and less wasteful choices about what to do with my money than some bureaucrat.

No doubt that Clinton did a little slash and burn on his way out... I always love it when democrats try to make sense.... ok, lets start again.
