was sad to read he passed on this morning. I miss times square from the 80s, when you could walk down 42nd street & step over the crackheads, catch a peep show. Now its just another mall.

My favorite memory of 42nd Street from one summer--1982 or '83: I was heading from the Port Authority on 8th Avenue towards 7th Ave, and saw a white guy, no shirt, shoes, or socks, standing in the street, maybe ten feet out from the kerb, repeatedly yelling the "N" word. Because of the demographics of that part of 42nd Street, his behavior was extremely foolhardy.
I saw Ed Koch a few times on the street when I lived in NYC, and once heard him give a speech outside City Hall. He seemed to embody the spirit of the city in those days. RIP.Comment
