Alabama child hostage situation
 

This is the story that has given me the most chills this week and I barely know anybody that is following it.

Guy tries to board a school bus, bus driver says no. Bus driver gets shot four times and killed and guy takes child and has been holding him in an underground bunker for four days so far.

When i heard this on the news, i didn't know he had a child hostage. I thought he had just barricaded himself into the bunker. I remember thinking to myself, why not just let him sit in there then.

Some of us are following this and holding their breath.

Here where we live, we don't have school buses to carry kids to and from schools. If kids need to take the bus, they have to use the city bus system - where anyone can ride. It's scary. Needless to say we drive our kid to and from school every day.

Yeah, I'm watching this hoping for a good ending. The parents of this boy must be mentally exhausted at this point.

Other countries don't play this waiting game.

Because sleeping gas just doesn't work 'instantly' there is a period of time for it to take effect, despite what you see in the movies.

I'm sure they are concerned that during the stage before the dude goes 'under' he might realize something is up and hurt the kid... Resulting in a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against the government.

Horrible story. The fact that there is no connection between the child and the abductor makes it even weirder.

Plus, could a kid take the level of gas that it would take to work on a grown man?

Apart from shoot his bus driver in front of him and take him hostage. If he is released, I am sure his mental health has been impacted.

Also, the reports said that the child has some kind of medical problem. They had to lower down medication to him AND he was captured because he fainted when the bus driver got shot. Maybe he's too frail to handle a gas like that.

Hmm all the people involved didn't NEED a gun before hand. I bet some of them wish they had one during this nutbag's little spree.

I'm surprised this isn't receiving more coverage. Absolutely heartbreaking. I can't even imagine what that poor child and his family are going through. I just hope he continues to give the kid his medicine and not do anything to him and hopefully they get him out of there ASAP. :(

It isn't receiving more coverage because the victim is black. If that had been a pretty little white girl holed up in the bunker with that old man, the story would be getting damn near 24/7 coverage.

What is the matter with taking a normal bus, I took a normal bus from the age of 9 to school. Shit, if I lived in a place where I was scared of letting my kid out of my sight, I'd move.

I could think of more than a handful of reason not to want a young kid to ride a public bus. It's one thing if they are a teenager, but any younger than that there is no way in hell.

Just saw the full story on CNN.

What happened is it's an older man who is very protective of his property. He is real paranoid and gets pissed off at anybody fucking around on the property he owns.

Neighbors said he "patrols" his property (apparently a big chunk of land) at night with a gun and a flashlight to keep people from partying on his land.

Anyway, the road dead ends at his property. And the bus does a turn around there on his land every morning.

For whatever reason he got irritated about it and told them to stop driving on his land.

The bus really couldn't turn around any other way so they continued to do it.

The old man went batshit crazy the other morning, and that's where it stands now.

From watching the Sheriff's press conference today, it looks like they believe it's going to be settled without further violence. The Sheriff said they are in constant communication. That the guy has electric heaters and electric blankets in the bunker and has allowed the Sheriff to give him coloring books and asthma medication for the kid.

So hopefully they will be able to calm him down enough to finally get this resolved without anything worse happening.
