internet vs. Acacia Media
is there any sort of website up yet for that? just a site to detail what Acacia is trying do would draw a lot of attention from everywhere instead of bits and pieces here and there.

I own acaciasucks.com
If anyone of you wants to put some time into it and do something with it, I'll give it to you for free. |
Acacia are doing nothing wrong LEGALLY. They have a patent on the process of downloading video. They are just defending something they own. The problem is with the idiots at the patent office and your legal system. I doubt if they would go after anyone in a country where the case would be reviewed by a judge before people spent millions on it.
They know it was already happening when the patent was registered and they know they did nothing to develope it or protect it (sue infringers) until now. All these points would lose them the case in court. However they never will go after anyone who will have enough money to defend themselves in court. The Microsoft's of the world are safe because a bully only bullies the weak. They know they will lose it if they go after someone who will fight them, best thing is not to go after them. Unless someone organises a big fighting fund and team to back it this will continue and Acacia will make a bundle just charging those too weak to defend themselves. Remember Acacia are doing nothing legally wrong, what are your chances of getting costs or your money back? They are also a company of lawyers, they work for themselves. |
seems like microsoft, real, etc... should be suing acacia...

If they get enough balls from winning the "smaller" cases they will go after bigger game. |

If I recall correctly, their patent has nothing to do with "downloading" from the Internet. This has something to do with TV's.
They are playing legal games and going after smaller companies first. |
they also have tv patents.. that's separate.
Here's the thing that affects us: http://www.acaciaresearch.com/dmt/dmt_engineering.html |

Acacia probably know that if they start to look at the big guys, Bill Gates or someone might think these guys need stopping. But while they are swimming around taking chunks out of the minnows and doing very nicely thank you, why should they go after the one that may beat them and then they will lose everything. Think about it form their side of the fence. They have a perfectly legal patent, that probably would lose if it was tested in court. So why go there. Virgin are probably the biggest fish they will go for, give them a nominal royalty charge, sign them up into a contract where they say "We get 100s of these every year, so we had our lawyers look at the case and thought it better to settle" Got to admire Acacia's business acumen. Morally arseholes, but then they are not frightened of taking porno people to court. |
Here's a site you can read. http://www.adultbuzz.com/011503/videotransmission.phtml
There's another company like Acacia called PanIP LLC. "They claim that if you use graphical and textual information on a video screen for purposes of making a sale, then you are infringing on their patent" |
