"PORTLAND, Ore. An Oregon sheriff has written Vice President Joe Biden to say his department won't enforce any new gun laws he considers unconstitutional.

In his letter, Sheriff Tim Mueller of Linn County said politicians are "attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims" by supporting laws that would harm law-abiding Americans.

"We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe upon the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws," the sheriff wrote.

Mueller says he took an oath to support the Constitution, and laws preventing citizens from owning certain semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines would violate their rights.

Though the letter might add fuel to an already hot topic, Mueller told The Associated Press he wishes people could have a civilized discussion about the issue, rather than resort to threats and name-calling.

Biden headed a task force tasked to recommend gun control measures to President Obama in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. School shooting. Mr. Obama was to unveil a set of proposals Wednesday.

Mueller told CBS Portland, Ore. affiliate KOIN-TV he wrote the letter partly because he felt Biden's task force didn't consult law enforcement enough when putting together its report.

"I didn't just fall off the cabbage truck yesterday; I know that the chances that the vice president is actually going to read this is pretty slim," Mueller told KOIN Tuesday."

When the gun laws change the Sheriff will be so upset that he might take his own life or perhaps crash his car

Nice to know some west coast sheriff has a constitutional law degree, who would have thought he would be that over qualified for the job.

Yes. A country where individual sheriffs decide which laws they want to enforce or not enforce - That's a great idea! I can't wait for the guy who announces he doesn't want to protect battered women because 'they ought to be able to fend for themselves' or the self-appointed local dictator who feels he should not bother enforcing laws against lynching black people because he happens to be a racist.

The fact that you may happen to disagree with a law that he doesn't want to enforce doesn't make empowering local asshats to supersede the legal process a good idea. The way our system works is Congress passes a law, the President enacts and enforces the law and if you think it isn't constitutional you see if the Supreme Court wants to overturn it. UNTIL then you STFU and enforce the law. If he fails to do so he ought to be fired immediately.

This has NOTHING to do with gun control and everything to do with maintaining order by securing a Constitutional chain of command.

Later today, obama will attempt to use children and emotion to argue that which he can not argue with reason and intelligence.

He fully understands how to lead his lemmings.
