But I can turn on a light switch and wire a house but I only found out about Tesla a few months ago. So one does not equate to the other. Not sure that I have ever used Einstein for anything. I read his book though.

It's good you like to read, that'll separate you from most people.
Nothing really surprises me, I run into people who didn't know Hitler's role in history. Given over a span of time, none of it really matters. If I want to work with somebody or have a kid with somebody red flags will go up about the person but it doesn't mean you have to treat them as subhuman.
Reading comprehension helps along with reading a lot, I've corrected several people (in private to save face) after demonstrations or talks about something they are presenting.
