Co Q-10

Does anyone here take this and have you noticed any improvements? My doctor has had me on Simvastatin for the past year and recently took me off. My last blood test results showed that the Simvastatin has caused liver damage and type 2 diabetes. My doctor offered to write me a new prescription for something else and then another prescription for the diabetes but I refused it and decided to do my own research.

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, ubidecarenone, coenzyme Q, and abbreviated at times to CoQ10 /ˌkoʊ ˌkjuː ˈtɛn/, CoQ, or Q10 is a 1,4-benzoquinone, where Q refers to the quinone chemical group, and 10 refers to the number of isoprenyl chemical subunits in its tail.

...Because GFY is the best place to ask for medical recommendations/advice

Not looking for medical advice, just personal experience from anyone taking it.

Did you try taking some phytosterols, fiber, garlic + fish oil? all are natural + free of side effects and are pretty cheap when bought online...

Since I've stopped taking the meds in December I started taking Psyllium fiber and Omega-3 supplements.

icymelon 01-05-2013 05:37 PM

I think coQ10 is something you take when you are on statins. If you want to lower your chlorestrol with out a statin you probably want to try
1) losing weight
2) hour of cardio day
3) omega 3
4) fiber pills
5) stop eatting red meat and chicken

but like they said gfy is not the best place to get medical advice. I am not a doctor. I know myself I started fiber pills, 5 hours cardio week and no chicken and red meat lowered mine to 200. Technically I could probably get a statin still.

I've been taking coQ10 for ages. It's very heart healthy. Just google coQ10 benefits, you'll see.

The system of Big Pharma is designed to damage you and leave you dependent on their pills, only listen to your doctor for symptoms, but turn down the pills and go natural :2 cents:

I prefer L-Arginine (NOS) during weekdays, and a flush using Milk Thistle, Dandelion, and Yellow Dock (one pill) on Friday Night, Saturday, and Sunday to flush out everything.

I've started a fiber and omega-3 supplement after refusing the take any more of the prescribed medications. I'm also trying to walk at least 10 minutes per day. I only eat one meal a day but when I do I try to include more vegetables. Whole milk used to be my main drink but I've switched to nonfat milk and trying to drink more plain water.

My doctor actually wants me to eat more chicken, I fucking hate chicken. I usually eat seafood but I'm told it has too much sodium.

Thank you, I've seen a lot of positive articles about the supplement. I'm leaning toward adding this to my supplements along with Niacin.

I totally agree with this. I think we're all programmed to trust doctors but after seeing what the statin has done to my liver and blood sugar I did some research on it. I've read a lot of negative articles about it and a lot of doctors totally against prescribing it unless you're age 50-75 with prior heart conditions, but not for lowering cholesterol.

Wanna lower your cholesterol? Take a shitload of niacin! Be sure you take niacin and not niacinamide. The latter, though common in many formulations, lacks the power of the former.

I've been taking megadoses of niacin (and loads of other supplements) for nearly 20 years. Even though my diet is extremely high cholesterol, my blood cholesterol is 135(!). BTW GFED, common (un)wisdom says that high dietary cholesterol causes high blood cholesterol. This is false. High dietary carbohydrates cause high blood cholesterol, among many other bad things.

Google niacin cholesterol...it's amazing.

In case you couldn't tell lol, this kind of thing is a longtime passion of mine. If you ever want to discuss, my icq is in my profile. I'm glad you're looking at other options aside from the poisons big pharma sells:thumbsup

Yes, niacin seems to be one of the more popular supplements getting documented on even from the mainstream media and physicians. It amazes me that I was ever prescribed simvastatin in the first place when so many other healthier alternatives are available.

I've also been testing various natural forms of aroma therapy. Lavender to bring down blood pressure, Eucalyptus for congestion, Peppermint for headaches, Clove for toothaches, etc.

I must say that all natural forms have been just as effective as any medicinal counterpart except for the Lavender which actually increases my heart rate from an idle speed of about 80bpm to about 140bpm.

Lots of good advice ITT. Big pharma companies are the devil incarnate and your doctor is just as good of an educated guesser as the weather man and a legal drug dealer.

Wow thanks for your input.
Care to list all the things you take and why?
I am already headed to the store!

you don't have to test lavender to see if it does that

it does.

I'm pretty sure this is why I was required to signed a contract before receiving the medication from the pharmacist. How many of us still take prescribed medication despite what is listed on the side effects?

Choopa Phil put it quite well in terms of doctors and what they prescribe. Often, it's a situation where the cure and it's side effects are worse than the problem.

In terms of blood pressure, exercise is always Plan A. Also, check out the Resperate device. It's basically a biofeedback machine and in my experience, it works:thumbsup You can find them on ebay for $130 or so.

I did a little bit more reading into this and found that not only are carbohydrates a major cause of bad high cholesterol (by lowering HDL, increasing Triglycerides, and increasing LDL) , saturated fats actually do the opposite.

So basically the food pyramid most of us grew up with is promoting heart disease.

Bingo!

You know who writes those food pyramid guidelines? Representatives from the Big Food industry:disgust One guess whether they're looking out for people's health or looking out for their profits...

Large dosages of Simvastatin (80mg) have been known to cause problems. Lipitor is safer and generic now (Atorvasatin). If you have a real cholesterol HDL blood lipid profile problem there are no effective HDL natural remedies other then the obvious; not to the add dietary cholesterol and exercise. Fibre foods help raise the LDL (the good cholesterol) levels, oatmeal is one, maybe -- the higher the LDL ratio the better. Eating high-fibre foods can't hurt (good for the digestion) but all this natural remedy stuff if you have a real medical problem may end up killing you -- arteriosclerosis, heart attack, stroke -- not to be taken lightly ...

Elevated HDL cholesterol is both genetic and environmental (diet). Don't eat many eggs, whole milk and butter fats, whole milk cheeses, fatty meats in moderation, avoid all organ meats, lobster, shrimp (shell foods). "All the good stuff." I read the food labels and have identified most of the cholesterol amounts in foods.

My cholesterol is 110 HDL /44 LDL and the arteriosclerosis seems to be arrested. So, there is your improvement -- not dying as fast. Just came back from the cardiologist today. For what it is worth, 80mg Atorvasatin daily along with Plavix and asprin therapy. I was using Simvasatin till a year ago when the FDA advisory was issued.
