Hey Canadians!

If a US citizen was to move to Canada to live out the rest of their life and take advantage of the health care system you guys have going on... What would it take?

If any of you know Shemp, tell him to ICQ me.

xoxo Happy New Year!

Perhaps you're interested in taking advantage of the "free" tuberculosis along with other contagious bacterial infections that run ramped in a majority of Canadian hospitals?
Maybe you're inquiring of how you can not chose your own doctor because you know, it's all free, right?

Kiopa_Matt 01-04-2013 06:11 AM

You need permanent residency status. Start here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/

Once you have that, it differs on province, but most require you to live there around 6 months before you can apply for healthcare. So get your PR status which will take 12 - 18 months, then move to Canada for 6 months, and you'll get free healthcare!

  1. Renounce the republican and the tea party.
  2. Throw your guns into a iron smelter
  3. Swear an oath promising to not engage in doing jack ass like things.
  4. Learn not to snicker or sneer at other's misfortunes.
  5. Remember and live by the canadien slogan that stranger is just a friend you have not met yet.
  6. Stop going to McDonalds because it is only for tourist.
  7. Learn to speak some french... with a québécois accent.
  8. Stop being a baptist or any other born again racist asshole.
  9. Never say "we are number 1 again" while torturing small animals or a poor person.
  10. Have coffee at least once a month with a gay man and discuss the theory of equality
  11. Have a snowball fight then play hockey in the streets and never keep score.

Unless of course you decide to move to Alberta.

In which case you can continue to be a loud mouthed asshole that calls everyone pinko commie faggots, hates gays, immigrants, the french and believes women should learn to make their own shoes if they want them so badly. Be prepared to help rednecks cheat in any election they want. And be a closet homosexual but deny it by showing everyone how big your gun is and how many you own while proudly boasting how much oil you waste and green house gases you dump into the atmosphere.

SKUP 01-04-2013 06:46 AM

What you actually say is: Mission impossible? :warning

MontrealDave 01-04-2013 07:02 AM

Fastest way in Quebec is get a temporary work visa, work and after 90 days you are fully covered and if you can manage to speak French, you can get fast track permanent paper in 6 months instead of 18 months.

Like most Western countries, we have a point system for determining if we need you or not. For more info, take a look here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index-can.asp

I think you can also buy your way in if you have more than 1/2 million dollars to invest in a business too. Canada is cold but very civilized.

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

This isn't true in my experience. LOL.

Phoenix 01-04-2013 08:23 AM

Already pointed out to you...the easiest way is to get permanent resident status.
From what i have heard lately immigration here has gotten more strict.
The plan on bringing in people from all over and they help grow Canada has sort of failed because they never leave Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. We already have enough people there..lol

In regards to the hospitals, people have no clue. I have never experienced anything but professionalism and the best care you could hope for. Recently my friend had his daughter go in for BRAIN SURGERY, and she came out just fine and is perfectly healthy now. I figure if they can do that cleanly they can also do all the minor surgeries that need done without giving anyone Tuberculosis...lol

Here's the thing, if you have a pre-existing condition that could cost tax payers money, you will not be eligible to become a Canadian citizen. They have very specific rules against sick people coming over to suck money out of our healthcare system.

I know a couple of physicians and surgeons at the hospital here who tell me it is very common, however, for US citizens to come to Canada on "vacation" and then have healthcare administered and then get billed for it.

Apparently the hospitals here will bill you for services, as a foreign citizen, and you can make payments. It's my understanding that they come over and do it this way as it's cheaper than paying for medical services in the US, especially for the followup care and medications which are significantly cheaper than in the US. One of my friends from Ohio routinely comes here for his Diabetes treatments and diabetic medications and supplies and does exactly what I described above.

Just a side note, there is an insane amount of misconception on how the Canadian Health Care System works. One of them is being "free". It is NOT free, however it is universal health care system (publicly funded) - which MEANS if you're a Canadian or a legal immigrant you will be covered. Like others mentioned in here, we all pay for it through various tax sources like sales and income. If you are looking to take advantage of a health care system I would suggest some of the Scandinavian countries like Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden OR a place like Switzerland but goodluck with your venture. :Oh crap

there was a report in the Windsor Star here several years ago, when the US economy, well Detroit's economy was in a slightly better position. During that time, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, we'd average about 10,000 Americans between 18 and 21 comming over to go to our clubs as they are legal to drink over here. Anyways, the report said that the unpaid medical bills of Americans who come here and get treated at our clinics and hospitals was the single largest source of lost income for the city. something in the millions per year, in a city of 200,000 people. The report stated that it ranged from all sorts of things, like accidents and planned treatments, but a big offender was guys in bar fights.

So not to harp on you Americanos any more, but your kids come over here, get drunk, fight, get their ass kicked, we stitch them up, then they skip out on the bill.

when I got sick in Florida when I was a kid, my dad had to fork over $400 before they would unlock the door to the waiting room in emerge.

CDSmith 01-04-2013 10:16 AM

I recently had a good dose of our health care system, as my old family doctor retired thus I had to find another one. How it works is you call in to a central office and they give you a list of physicians in your area who are taking on new patients. You can choose your doctor from that list, and if for some reason it doesn't work out or you end up not liking that doctor you can choose another, or phone that # back and get more referrals until you find one you like.

There are also many walk-in clinics and sports medicine facilities that take walk-ins where you can get seen by a doctor right away.

I've seen my new doctor three times in the past month (initial consult, physical exam, and of course the follow-up where they go over your results, x-rays etc). So far I have not exhibited any signs of having gotten tuberculosis :D

Jen -- need someone to marry you into Canada?

Not only is that article 6 months old, but you read it wrong. It says NO infants show any indication of the disease. The hospital found out that a nurse was a carrier of the disease and she stopped working. Furthermore, the hospital went over the top (called an "abundance of caution" in the article) to make sure. 77 of the 88 babies received chest X-rays, with 8 more having appointments, JUST TO MAKE SURE.

And, all of the above, was free, too.

So -
