Hey Canadians!
If a US citizen was to move to Canada to live out the rest of their life and take advantage of the health care system you guys have going on... What would it take?
If any of you know Shemp, tell him to ICQ me. xoxo Happy New Year! |

Maybe you're inquiring of how you can not chose your own doctor because you know, it's all free, right? :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh |
You need permanent residency status. Start here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/
Once you have that, it differs on province, but most require you to live there around 6 months before you can apply for healthcare. So get your PR status which will take 12 - 18 months, then move to Canada for 6 months, and you'll get free healthcare! |
I hope the OP is trolling... :1orglaugh

Unless of course you decide to move to Alberta. In which case you can continue to be a loud mouthed asshole that calls everyone pinko commie faggots, hates gays, immigrants, the french and believes women should learn to make their own shoes if they want them so badly. Be prepared to help rednecks cheat in any election they want. And be a closet homosexual but deny it by showing everyone how big your gun is and how many you own while proudly boasting how much oil you waste and green house gases you dump into the atmosphere. |
What you actually say is: Mission impossible? :warning
|
Fastest way in Quebec is get a temporary work visa, work and after 90 days you are fully covered and if you can manage to speak French, you can get fast track permanent paper in 6 months instead of 18 months.

I think you can also buy your way in if you have more than 1/2 million dollars to invest in a business too. Canada is cold but very civilized. |

Already pointed out to you...the easiest way is to get permanent resident status.
From what i have heard lately immigration here has gotten more strict. The plan on bringing in people from all over and they help grow Canada has sort of failed because they never leave Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. We already have enough people there..lol In regards to the hospitals, people have no clue. I have never experienced anything but professionalism and the best care you could hope for. Recently my friend had his daughter go in for BRAIN SURGERY, and she came out just fine and is perfectly healthy now. I figure if they can do that cleanly they can also do all the minor surgeries that need done without giving anyone Tuberculosis...lol |

Apparently the hospitals here will bill you for services, as a foreign citizen, and you can make payments. It's my understanding that they come over and do it this way as it's cheaper than paying for medical services in the US, especially for the followup care and medications which are significantly cheaper than in the US. One of my friends from Ohio routinely comes here for his Diabetes treatments and diabetic medications and supplies and does exactly what I described above. |

So not to harp on you Americanos any more, but your kids come over here, get drunk, fight, get their ass kicked, we stitch them up, then they skip out on the bill. when I got sick in Florida when I was a kid, my dad had to fork over $400 before they would unlock the door to the waiting room in emerge. |
I recently had a good dose of our health care system, as my old family doctor retired thus I had to find another one. How it works is you call in to a central office and they give you a list of physicians in your area who are taking on new patients. You can choose your doctor from that list, and if for some reason it doesn't work out or you end up not liking that doctor you can choose another, or phone that # back and get more referrals until you find one you like.
There are also many walk-in clinics and sports medicine facilities that take walk-ins where you can get seen by a doctor right away. I've seen my new doctor three times in the past month (initial consult, physical exam, and of course the follow-up where they go over your results, x-rays etc). So far I have not exhibited any signs of having gotten tuberculosis :D Jen -- need someone to marry you into Canada? |
