I have my own drone.

My GF gave me an AR DRONE 2.0 Quadcopter for Christmas. It's cat terrorizing flying computer with a 32 bit on board processor at 1 GHz, 1 Gigabit of Ram, Wifi, 2 HD 720p 60 fps Cameras, Ultrasonic sensors, accelerometer, 3 axis gyrocope, pressure sensors etc, and it runs Linux.

It auto lands, auto stabilizes, and broadcasts live HD video back to my iPhone and iPad which I control just by tilting.

I am loving the future very, very much.

Scott McD 12-26-2012 04:55 PM

Nice. I got socks...

Yes you can fly inside as well. It has an indoor and outdoor cover.

It's a cool gadget, and very easy to fly compared to RC helicopters.
But it's indeed one of those that you use for a while and then end up never touching it again.

That's one of the downsides - you can only get up to 10 mins.

ouch, then it needs some modifications ...... at imho it should fly least 30 minutes for some serious fun/work

Mr Pheer 12-27-2012 01:40 AM

Mine can go for about 15 minutes, flies about 35mph, has a gyro-stabilized camera gymbal, takes 1080p video, and I fly it thru video goggles that I wear... just as if I were sitting in the pilot's seat.

Auto hovers, auto trim, has failsafe settings, can be set to automatically return to home, quite a bit larger and heavier than the Parrot (and much more powerful) so that wind does not affect it... and even if the wind does blow it around, the stabilized camera gymbal removes any evidence of movement.

I built it for about $2800 from parts I gathered myself. A lot of things I already have just from being in the RC airplane hobby for so many years.

The parrot is a fun toy and a good trainer if you want to step up to a more serious aircraft. The first thing I would do after you get bored with it, is mod it to fly with a real radio transmitter instead of an iOS device.

JFK 12-27-2012 03:00 AM

Congrats , enjoy:thumbsup

i cunt A4D a drone... :(

SpeedoDave 12-27-2012 04:22 AM

What kind of range does that have - line of sight I'm assuming.

Hottubs are on the other side of my building, would be fun to check out any tourist talent without walking downstairs.

I did not realize you were a drone enthusiast. Care to post photos / videos? I'd love to see your creation.

I'm into RC planes but have not flown in quite a while. I kinda got bored with airplane flight. Now drones are incredibly appealing.

Yes it flies inside. It comes with an "Indoor Hull" which is basicly padding for the propellers. I have been playing with it inside learning how to fly it down hallways, into rooms, etc.

I'm hoping it stays fun for a long time. There are tricks you can learn such as rolls, and games you can play as well including war games with other drones.

I really want to take it outside but its winter here and I'm afraid of it freezing up or getting it stuck in a tree. I will this spring for sure.

Not as long as I would like. Today was my first non-stop flight and it lasted about 20 minutes. I need to get a second battery.

Apparently it flies longer if you remove the Indoor Hull to make it lighter, and turn off video sending and recording, and skip the install of a usb key for recording as well.

Agreed. Just when I was finally getting the hang of it, my "low bat" indicator starting flashing.

Dave

The range is as far as WiFi will reach. It supports 802.11 G and N, with N offering the best range, so you need an Android or iOS with Wifi N for best possible range.

According to the instructions, if the copter flies out of range it will stop, hover and descend slowly until you can move to within range. I haven't tried that yet.

Would you be able to post a parts list. Aerial cinematography is what I want to get into and I'd like something a bit more than the Parrot to learn on.

I have it disassembled at the moment to make a new power distribution harness. My soldering skills are not as good as they used to be and a cold solder joint will cause a real bad day... and I am "soft mounting" everything with neoprene to kill some annoying vibrations that are causing a 'jello' effect in video shot at 1080p. But I will assemble pics of everything I have on my work table this evening and post it and a parts list for you guys. I've been meaning to do that anyway to make a blog post about it, so this is a good opportunity to get it done.

In the meantime...

This is a photo of it when I first started building the chassis:

http://www.pheermedia.com/pics/drone/droneairframe.jpg

And this is the kind of video it can shoot. Not my video, but taken with the same aircraft using the same setup I have.
