i knew that there's weird obscenity laws in the states, i just didn't realize that some don't have them spelled out a bit more. there should be a bit more direction for the courts to work with.

Looks to me like the guy was getting underage pics, and pled down to a lesser crime. Thats why it appears to be so extreme for only 2 nude pics.

Unfortunately, "underage pic" can be any pic of a young-looking girl whose age you can't prove (and Russian 22 year olds can look 12). Strange how the burden of proof gets switched in these cases.

Looks to me like he didn't want to receive possibly underage pics.
