Pluses of rooting Android phone?
 

Been tossing the idea back and forth on rooting my HTC Evo 3D.

What do you really get out of it?

I'd like to be able to remove half of the damn bloatware Sprint installs on this thing and customize it with the new HTC Sense. Can I do that? I've been looking through the xda-developers site and htcevohacks.com but I'm a bit lost.

I'm guessing you root and get s-off, then load up custom roms? From what I see, a lot of the roms have issues with wifi, 4g, 3g, 3D, etc...

Do any of you have a HTC Evo 3D rooted? If so, what rom are you running?

What you get?

Mucho headaches here and there. Make sure you do backups!

With the Rom Manager you can backup your phone completely. You will want to do this often. Actually... That is a plus of rooting. You can 100% completely back up the phone.

You can tether your phone as a WIFI spot and all of that jazz that Sprint doesn't like.

You can put the latest version of Android on your phone.

You can edit the /etc/hosts file and do stuff like adding ads.gofuckyourself.com and no longer have to see ads here. Though they might have changed the ads URL... You can also do that and then go to places like firstrowsports.eu and watch your favorite games without their ads all over the fucking place.

You can edit everything about your phone. Create symbolic links to shit. Not sure if you ever would need any of that.

You can remove the bloatware or install a ROM that doesn't include it... Bye bye, twitter, photobucket, and other bullshit you never use!

You can truly kill a task.

You can send syn packets if it makes your penis feel funny.

Loved my Nokia N900, Maemo was a truly open platform. There was even an inbuilt shell app that would drop you to a Linux prompt so you could do what you liked. Out of the box, no need for rooting. Now I've "upgraded" to an Android phone and I'm already feeling its limits (and noticed how often it phones home information to Google.)

I got a Galaxy S, I update it frequently with the last Android version. Actually, i use the 4.1 version with the SlimBean 3.0 ROM.

SlimBean is a very light and fast ROM, i like it.
I only use root for the theathering, because it's bypass the limitation of my operator. (Theathring is a expensive option, but in root mode is free :1orglaugh)

If you are a old rom (Without semaphore recovery mode), it's could be a little difficult to update it. But as soons as Semphore Recovery is installed, you could install ROMs & Apps automaticaly and easily.

With some ROMs, you could experience some bug, but frequently updates are useful to fix them. My original branded ROMs has worked very bad with the bluetooth of my car, but with SlimBeam it's works perfectly.

Think I'm going to try it and see what happens today. Worst case senario, I have a brand HTC windows phone sitting in a box I can use as a backup.

If only they'd stuck with it. Their best flagship model ever, and they end up completely abandoning the platform.

First time in over 15 years of owning a mobile phone that I haven't recontracted with a new one as soon as possible (usually around month 20-21 of 24). I held out about an extra 10 months past that point before the carrier made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

I now have a Samsung Galaxy Note II but apart from its large screen size I don't really see anything special about it... in fact there's a lot of frustration coming from the N900. I foresee that this new phone will be replaced in about 19 months!
