Why do americans say happy holidays and not merry christmas?

Free Country...

Because not all of its citizens are Christian?

Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, All the various winter solstice holidays. . |
That started happening around the time that "political correctness" was introduced...

There is no law that says you have to say Happy Holidays. Some of us just realize and respect that different people celebrate different things.
|
Something to do with the second amendment, probably.
|
I tell everyone Merry Christmas ;)
Oh, Merry Christmas to all........ |
Are you drinking the piss? I've never wished anyone a "happy holiday" in my fucking life, you bloody wanker. I don't care if your Jewish or Muslim or a goddamn Wiccan - you're getting a merry christmas, motherfucker.:xmas-smil30

America is going through a PC phase right now. Many cool people still find out what religion you are or what you celebrate, and say the appropriate greeting. It isn't that hard to know what the times and phrases are.

Because its all part of the liberal conspiracy to destroy traditional America and christmas

multietnics democratcy?

Just because you believe in some invisible jew, muslim, budha, whatever does not supersede my own beliefs. I am not going to put your tender feelings of "political correctness" over my own. If I tell you Merry Christmas, and you go on some rant, I will tell you to blow it out your ass. :2 cents: |

I never initiate these things, so I usually just say "same to you" when needed.
|
I won't be politically correct so I say Merry Christmas.

I think 'Happy Holidays' is used by people for 2 different reasons - 1)political correctness, unless somebody is a good friend they don't know if the person is a Christian or not 2) it covers the whole holiday season including New Years, it's an alternative to 'Seasons Greetings'
I like 'Merry Christmas', i hate seeing Christmas diluted into some vague politically correct holiday season. I could give a rat's ass about the religious aspect, I just like old traditions and hate when we lose them to political correctness. Any Jew or Muslim who gets offended when somebody amiably wishes them a 'Merry Christmas' is a douchebag. |
I say happy holidays because most people are on holidays around this time. I'm not a Christan so I don't say merry Christmas anymore. I do enjoy this time a year though. Lot's of drinking, eating, family, friends and all that warm fuzzy feeling stuff. Cheers and HAPPY HOLIDAYS :)
|
I say Merry Christmas, fuck political correctness.
If I offend someone by saying that, then they should say 'Happy Hanukkah' or similar right back and not be a little bitch about it... |

Someone said it earlier. And I'll add some. What I hate about the PC/Non-Christian switch is the change from tradition. Since the 80's it has been part of a plan to dilute the US of anything that is more cristo-centric than not. Now, festivals and holidays have become little more than marketing opportunities. The unique nature of celebrations have been watered down intentionally. Big corporations and New York bankers in for the win.
And someone brought up Bing Crosby. Nice guy who used to beat his kids with belts and electrical cords. Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat Guy. lol |
In the UK I don't know anyone who does not celebrate Christmas, and also don't know anyone who celebrates it for religious reasons. I do know people of many different religions (but strangely no Christians), who you may think don't celebrate Christmas, but they do.
In American, I have always assumed it was the media rather than the people been PC and liking to act like people get offended. In my experience American people are not the desperate to be outraged idiots that they are often made out to be. |
The real Jesus was born in April.
|
because Merry Christmas is the official slogan of american satanism?
|
Hipsters and 9-11 mostly
|
To close friends and family its Merry Christmas, to associates and otherwise it's Happy Holidays. It's just safer from a politically correct standpoint anymore.
I'm between DC & NYC and there are a lot of different type of folks & religions around, so its just easier to not have to think about it and say Happy Holidays to cover all the bases. |
I always say Merry Christmas and my best friend isn't shy to say fuck you I'm Jewish.

Shitheads in the media always need irrelevant bullshit to fill up airtime, so they've devoted countless hours to making saying "Happy Holidays" some kind of negative thing. As if they give a shit one way or another. http://gregstevens.name/wp-content/u...-christmas.png |
It's because of the "War on Christmas". Just ask Bill O'Reilly or any right-wing radio screamer, they'll tell ya.
