Because there are more than one holiday running concurrently?

Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, All the various winter solstice holidays.

That started happening around the time that "political correctness" was introduced...

Even more - only in usa do you find idiots who are upset when someone if someone says happy holidays instead of merry christmas and think this isan attack on christianity...

VamosNicholas 12-21-2012 07:26 PM

Eh, I say both. As already mentioned, it is the politically correct thing to do.

I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a little kid, so for 50+ years. It had nothing to do with being PC.

.

brassmonkey 12-21-2012 07:33 PM

there are many holidays because its a melting pot. i say both

epitome 12-21-2012 08:25 PM

There is no law that says you have to say Happy Holidays. Some of us just realize and respect that different people celebrate different things.

Eyeball 12-22-2012 06:38 AM

Something to do with the second amendment, probably.

Nikki_Licks 12-22-2012 06:51 AM

I tell everyone Merry Christmas ;)

Oh, Merry Christmas to all........

Shotsie 12-22-2012 07:02 AM

Are you drinking the piss? I've never wished anyone a "happy holiday" in my fucking life, you bloody wanker. I don't care if your Jewish or Muslim or a goddamn Wiccan - you're getting a merry christmas, motherfucker.:xmas-smil30

ilnjscb 12-22-2012 07:50 AM

America is going through a PC phase right now. Many cool people still find out what religion you are or what you celebrate, and say the appropriate greeting. It isn't that hard to know what the times and phrases are.

Fuck your feelings.

Just because you believe in some invisible jew, muslim, budha, whatever does not supersede my own beliefs. I am not going to put your tender feelings of "political correctness" over my own. If I tell you Merry Christmas, and you go on some rant, I will tell you to blow it out your ass.

CyberHustler 12-22-2012 09:50 AM

I never initiate these things, so I usually just say "same to you" when needed.

BigChad 12-22-2012 10:13 AM

I won't be politically correct so I say Merry Christmas.

Quote:

Happy Holiday (song)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Happy Holiday" (sometimes performed as "Happy Holidays") is a popular song composed by Irving Berlin during 1942.

The song was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1942 film Holiday Inn. While it is often regarded as a Christmas song, in the film it is performed on New Year's Eve, and expresses a wish for the listener to enjoy "happy holidays" throughout the entire year. The titular phrase is now most commonly associated with inclusive holiday greetings for the period around Christmas and the New Year.

The song has been recorded by numerous artists over the years, including Perry Como, Percy Faith, Jackie Gleason, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Peggy Lee, Barry Manilow (in a medley with "White Christmas"), Johnny Mathis (in a medley with Alfred Burt's "Caroling, Caroling"), Jo Stafford, and Andy Williams (in a medley with Kay Thompson's "The Holiday Season").
This had nothing to do with being PC.

Mutt 12-22-2012 10:52 AM

I think 'Happy Holidays' is used by people for 2 different reasons - 1)political correctness, unless somebody is a good friend they don't know if the person is a Christian or not 2) it covers the whole holiday season including New Years, it's an alternative to 'Seasons Greetings'

I like 'Merry Christmas', i hate seeing Christmas diluted into some vague politically correct holiday season. I could give a rat's ass about the religious aspect, I just like old traditions and hate when we lose them to political correctness. Any Jew or Muslim who gets offended when somebody amiably wishes them a 'Merry Christmas' is a douchebag.

Makaveli 12-22-2012 11:01 AM

I say happy holidays because most people are on holidays around this time. I'm not a Christan so I don't say merry Christmas anymore. I do enjoy this time a year though. Lot's of drinking, eating, family, friends and all that warm fuzzy feeling stuff. Cheers and HAPPY HOLIDAYS :)

Colmike9 12-22-2012 11:04 AM

I say Merry Christmas, fuck political correctness.
If I offend someone by saying that, then they should say 'Happy Hanukkah' or similar right back and not be a little bitch about it...

Yes, don't forget those of us that celebrate Festivus. Happy Festivus!

Captain Kawaii 12-22-2012 01:28 PM

Someone said it earlier. And I'll add some. What I hate about the PC/Non-Christian switch is the change from tradition. Since the 80's it has been part of a plan to dilute the US of anything that is more cristo-centric than not. Now, festivals and holidays have become little more than marketing opportunities. The unique nature of celebrations have been watered down intentionally. Big corporations and New York bankers in for the win.

And someone brought up Bing Crosby. Nice guy who used to beat his kids with belts and electrical cords. Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat Guy. lol

billbailey 12-22-2012 01:31 PM

In the UK I don't know anyone who does not celebrate Christmas, and also don't know anyone who celebrates it for religious reasons. I do know people of many different religions (but strangely no Christians), who you may think don't celebrate Christmas, but they do.

In American, I have always assumed it was the media rather than the people been PC and liking to act like people get offended. In my experience American people are not the desperate to be outraged idiots that they are often made out to be.

candyflip 12-22-2012 02:08 PM

The real Jesus was born in April.

Bill8 12-22-2012 03:31 PM

because Merry Christmas is the official slogan of american satanism?

xXXtesy10 12-22-2012 03:35 PM

Hipsters and 9-11 mostly

Max Potential 12-22-2012 03:37 PM

To close friends and family its Merry Christmas, to associates and otherwise it's Happy Holidays. It's just safer from a politically correct standpoint anymore.

I'm between DC & NYC and there are a lot of different type of folks & religions around, so its just easier to not have to think about it and say Happy Holidays to cover all the bases.

L-Pink 12-22-2012 05:22 PM

I always say Merry Christmas and my best friend isn't shy to say fuck you I'm Jewish.

How do you presume to know what Americans say...and don't say?

Cuz it's easier. If you're not exactly sure what holiday a particular person celebrates, but want to wish them happiness during the season, "Happy Holidays" has you covered. Plus, New Year's Day is considered a holiday, so "Happy Holidays" takes that into account.

Shitheads in the media always need irrelevant bullshit to fill up airtime, so they've devoted countless hours to making saying "Happy Holidays" some kind of negative thing. As if they give a shit one way or another.

It's because of the "War on Christmas". Just ask Bill O'Reilly or any right-wing radio screamer, they'll tell ya.

You probably owe him so money. He wouldn't be saying that to UPS guy or TGIF waiter.
