Future Predictions....

I was inspired by another thread.

Assuming the world doesn't end on Friday where do you the industry in 2020?

It goes so fucking fast it really is worth thing about. When I think that its soon going to be 2013 it blows my mind, 2020 will happen even faster. Its a side effect of getting old.

I think the biggest changes will be with copyright/licencing of content. Its already becoming clear that the laws as they stand do not work in the digital era.

There is going to have to be massive shift in the way we think about ownership of digital products.

The laws work quite well, the problem is compliance is quite low.

The main reason for things being so bad right now is that for too many years rightsholders had dropped the ball and were not pursuing those infringing upon their rights.

So you think its going to be enough to scare people into not watching 'stolen' video for example?

I think that's a bit optimistic.

I expect you can scare a lot of users into not downloading it - But streaming is a different story.

The trick is not to tackle end users at all, but to disrupt those who would provide the service in situations where they are providing access to unlicensed content.

End users don't understand the nuances of the proper licensing of content, nor should they need to. Going after end users is futile and just pisses people off.

I agree its pointless going after the users - Much better to take out the dealers.

I still think there is going to be a shift in thinking over the next decade though. I don't know where its going to go, but its unrealistic to think it can continue the way it is.

Its not just going to be getting harder on 'pirates' either - Its got to be a total shift in the way we do business.

Its just the start/end of a decade - A convenient point in time for reference.
