Had my first ride in a Thai police car today
 

Well in any police car.
Went out for breakfast during rush hour on my motobike, someone cut me off and I had to break hard 1-2 secs after I stopped another motobike hit me from behind.
20 year old girl she went down and hurt her leg.
She took out her phone called home and a police officer on a motobike happened to pass by within a couple of minutes.

He talked to her and from what I could understand she said what happened someone cut me off and I braked and she hit me, he asked for my passport but I never carry it but he accepted my driving license.
I usually always carry my phone but didn't have it with me so no way to contact anyone.
He called an ambulance.
A couple of relatives of her showed up, a crowd started to gather and I started to be uncomfortable with all the stories of Farang always do wrong. Then the ambulance went off with her to the hospital.
2 more officers shows up in their pick up truck took mine and her motobike on the back of their car saying we had first to go to the hospital to check on her and then to the police station and I am thinking "fuck this is going to cost me they will somehow pin it on me."
Off to the hospital in the back seat of the pick up, officer speaking limited English and I speak limited Thai, went to check on her ask me if I had a friend that could translate and I said take me home I will get my phone and we can call my wife (seperated long story) which I wasn't sure would answer my call haven't lately.
Took me home my neighbour is an ex cop and speaks good English, we shared a few beers and have a good relationship, had him translate for me, called my wife, no answer, police called my wife no answer.
Neighbour exchanged a few words and I were told have my wife call the cop, then we would have to go to the police station and we could pick up the motobike, police left with my motobike, helmet and breakfast I forgot to grab.

Just got a call from my wife, girl is OK and my wife can come by tomorrow to pick up my motobike and license, I am not going there to pick it up.

I have had only good experiences with police here been stopped 3 times on my motobike and once in the car and never had any Farang fines (knock on wood) but this time were the first time in an accident and I were scared, I have a friend that have spend a night in a Thai jail and thats something you don't want to try and I were thinking shit this is somehow going to cost me a butt load of money.

I have this recurring fear anytime I go to another country that something like this will happen to me and I will end up getting charged with some obscure law and be thrown in a 3rd world jail for years.

Good to hear you are OK and escaped Farang tax or serious accident. Did you know there are so many fatalities from scooters in Thailand that most of them don't even get reported to the media? Thailand is the #1 country in the world for foreigners dying on the roads. The roads are kill zones. Be careful. You've probably just acquired your first "Thai tattoo" with some nice road rash.

My last accident landed me with two broken feet and serious road rash on one side of my body after being hit by a speeding car.

Be thankful you live in a normal area, or you'd probably have plenty of bad run-ins with the police by now. After I was hit by the car, weeks later when I could walk I had to go deal with the police to get what was left of my bike back. Even though the driver was at fault, the police called him and was trying to get them to come to the station so they could all get money from me. He didn't know I understood what he was saying. He was practically begging them to come down so they could work me for as much as possible. They car owner declined. After he hung up I told him in Thai that it was a nice try but he's not collecting from this Farang. The policeman was salty as hell and took his time finishing the paperwork while I played games on my phone and chuckled out loud from time to time just to let him know he lost that one. Cock sucker.

Depending on the police and the other local in the accident, they sometimes conspire to milk you. Suddenly a minor accident becomes very painful for the Thai and their scooter that has nothing more than a hairline scratch needs to be totally replaced. Of course not all of them are cock sucking bastards like this, and if you know how to stand your ground, you often don't have to pay anything other than the real damages you may have caused.

If I do wrong, I'll take care of it 100%. But I won't let them hose me if I didn't do wrong. I stand my ground with them and speak enough Thai to let them know they are not going to get anywhere with me and I have all night to waste and nothing else to do. It's also not legally a matter for the police to decide what payment is, so be sure to remind them of that as well. They just try to bluff you into cashing them out, and the Thai who got into the accident will then share their money with the police. It's a scam and most people allow it to happen.

Best place to live. You just have to know how to play their game and you get literally get away with almost anything. You can do anything you want, anytime you want to do it.

You can literally fist fight police here if you wanted to and not much is going to come of it other than a small fine (less than $100). Very seldom to police shoot foreigners, and it's usually some druken cop in a bar in some small hick town somewhere if it happens. You pretty much have the run of the place here. It's awesome.

Nothing happened to me I never even fell to the ground she just hit me and fell down, with the scooter over her, me being 240 pounds and the scooter on top it takes more to knock me down :D
What you are describing were my worst fear pin it on me for some obscure reason, pay or stay in jail, if this had been Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket or some other tourist area I doubt I would things would have been handled in the same way.

I have my wounds from a previous accident in a village where a truck cut in front of me and when I hit the brakes because of the dirt road I went down and got a few bruises. He ofcause never signaled that he were turning, just pulled right and then turned left :mad: with me breaking for my life.

I were polite, explained to the cops what happened and knowing what she told the first cop I would have kept things, I am not not paying anything and kept saying I did nothing wrong. It were scare in the hospital with what I assume were her dad and some friends from school, I never went inside to the emergency room to see her since that can be taken as an admission of guilt.

Hopefully everything is sorted tomorrow get my license and scooter back and move on.

Lived here for about 5 years, coming from Denmark the weather, food and prices are great reasons but the major reason is, guy goes somewhere meets girl, look at things and then things happen.
Day to day comparing to Denmark its a good life.

I spent the night at Lumpini police station a few months ago. Big bosses were away smiling for the cameras as they had just caught a guy who went on a shooting spree and killed his girlfriend. Two young officers on duty were drunk as hell, trying to shake down every farang, saw an older guy, he paid. They were obnoxious, threatening to keep me till monday since it was the w.e, talking about my visa, etc. They would go away come back. I just waited til the morning and called my lawyer. Wasn't too bad apart from them bringing the killer they caught and putting him in the same cell. to be fair he just kept his head down, had other things on his mind. When my lawyer called the same cop was still on duty, half baked excuse that he was letting me go because I'm a good uy but really he looked worried. fucker only understand force.

Funny how the ATM at Lumpini is inside the police station, not outside on the wall or in the entrance but inside.

Yeah I thought about buying some chocolate or flowers or something for her that would be the normal thing to do and I have thought about this, because this is the normal thing to do.
If I do it here it could be taken as admission of guilt in a civil trial. I want to do it but the risk of it back firing are to great. If it were Denmark I would go say hello are you OK and bring a flower or two but here, No. If I can avoid going to the Police Station tomorrow to pick up my license and scooter and have someone else do it, then thats whats going to happen.

I got a 5$ ticket for no helmet, no licence or id on me.. the cop took my keys till I went and paid the fine.. I didn't trust leaving him my bike so I gave him my FAKE watch lol and went back to my hotel to get money and paid the fine.. the cop than returned to the police station and gave me my watch back... that was in phuket. in chiang mai there was three of us on a bike all with no helmets and big bottle of beers in our hands crossing a police line and they just allowed us through while stopping the thais..

I always felt like I could do whatever I wanted, cops never did shit, had trouble with a white dude in the bar throwing shit at a waitress, he than punches a thai friend, i get in the middle and my friend smashes a bottle over his head and throws him down the stairs and he gets kick out.. upon leaving that night this guy is still outside with the cops and he comes chasing us, I heaped him sending him flying on his ass, and the cops didnt do shit. now If i was starting shit with a thai, not only would i have a group of them jumping on me, the cops would get involved.

You can say the same about most places. Corruption is almost everywhere in the world, just not always in your face and available to your advantage. Here you can use it to your advantage, so that is actually a huge bonus. I'd rather be able to use it in my favor than not.

Regarding anti-porn laws, there are more countries in the world who have anti-porn laws than not. Some places just tolerate it better than others. But make no mistake, Thailand gives two shits about people working in the porn business, as the Thais are permitted to do it with no problems. They only care about foreigners doing it and how much money they can milk them for if they catch them.

Thailand has a blanket traffic law whereby regardless of the circumstances, the one who goes into the back of the other is to blame. Yes even if somebody stops suddenly for no reason. :)

Legally yes, but that doesn't stop them from trying to extort you for money and saying it is your fault anyway. You know that. It's all about the Baht. Most people don't want to deal with the courts so they just pay up.

well,this is where most of male expats go. I dont say other places dont exist but the fact is a lot of such males exist who live in the land of pussy yet they are miserable and they sit in the bars and complain..Again,I'm sure majority of male (especially older) expats would not go to Thailand if not for these places.

Had to go to the police station today my presence were required.

Showed up, she were represented by her father, since she is still in the hospital and need surgery cause she blew out something in her knee.

We were both asked if we repaired our own scooters and had no claim for injuries against the other and we both agreed and that was that. We signed the daily journal where they enter everything.

Turns out the father of the girl hadn't slept all night he thought I were driving a regular motor cycle and if she had broken something on that its expensive and he worried about where to get the money, and the police told him his daughter were lucky I wasn't hurt or it could have been very expensive for them!

The fact I only have a license for a car were brushed aside with a "go get a motobike license" which were another concern of me since back home driving without the proper license you are automatically at fault.

We got our motobikes back and I send someone to the hospital today with a little get well present for the girl.

All in all this have been a positive experience, I could have done without it but at no point being asked for tea money or felt like anyone trying to shift the blame.
I were never asked to show my passport to show my visa which surprised me a bit.

Lived here 5 years, tired of the weather, prices and countless other things living in Denmark and since I work online why not explore the world all I need is a internet connection, why not do.

See reply above. I have never been convicted of any crimes, never commited any worse than smoke a little weed or jaywalking and actually would love if Thailand changed their visa laws to require proof of a criminal record for Non-O visas.


Where I live I wouldn't know how to get a hooker, I have an idea based on the lights outside some establishments but they are are targeting the domestic market not foreigners like me and I have no interest in spending time in any of those places.
When I originally moved here I planned on living in Pattaya since it seemed like a happening place, DWB recommended against it but I ignored it and I lasted less than 2 months there it is the arm pit of the world as DWb described it to me and in 5 years I haven't been back, I reluctantly stay overnight in Bangkok if I have to catch an early flight the next morning.



Love it here, 8pm now and I am sitting in shorts and a tshirt and sweating beats Denmark with 10-20cm of snow :pimp
